I, like most people, knew only the vaguest outline of Nellie Bly's record breaking journey around the world. I knew nothing of the details of her trip or the fact that Elizabeth Bisland also attempted the same journey at the same time only in the opposite direction.
Contrary to another reviewer, I found Goodman's "tangents" illuminating. A book that focused only on the journey would have nothing of the context in which each event took place. One must know about the background to fully understand the significance of what takes place.

I enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it.
