I wanted to love this book, in fact I was loving this book. It's mostly categorized as historical essay and people call it a love letter to books. It is indeed just that, but it drags in for way too long.

The boom is split in two parts; I enjoyed the first half so much, I anotated it as if my index tab and sticky notes supplies were endless, I felt the love and adoration for books, the story while noticeably being taken from text books and articles was well put together. 

But then, then it just became unnecessaroly long, part two was a repetition of part one, it was the author saying "ancient Romans kept ancient Greek culture because they wanted to be like them" way too often.

And out of nowhere the author goes a couple of full chapters to ramble about not being like other girls (like other kids, for that matter) because she loves books.

It pains me because I was enjoying it so much but it came a point when it was hard for me to simply open the book and read a page, I didn't want to read the same thing I've read on part one, or claims from the author about how current times are shitty and the past was better, trashing technological advances and acting like the "boomers" the internet makes fun of.

But part one was endearing, fluid and charming, so I'll just split my five stars in the middle.

Me cuesta valorar este libro porque me he ido dando cuenta a medida que lo leía de que yo no soy su público objetivo. Es una obra de divulgación, que se lee de manera agradable, pero no me ha contando mucho que no supiera ya, por mi formación en Filología Clásica. Además, en la última parte repite constantemente algunas ideas que, en mi opinión, ya habían quedado bastante claras.

En definitiva, está bien escrito, es interesante, y me gustaría que mis alumnos mayores (en Bachillerato, si no estuvieran tan agobiados) lo leyeran, pero creo que no merece la campaña de propaganda que se le está haciendo. Amigos en las altas esferas, ya se sabe, aunque sean las de la filología.

Una de las mejores lecturas de ensayo que he podido leer nunca. Irene Vallejo tiene una prosa poética y evocadora que te hace querer seguir leyendo, olvidándote de que estás leyendo un ensayo. Brutal.

Con la excusa de contar el nacimiento de los libros, la autora te sumerje en cómo era el mundo antiguo, y cómo esto influyó en el desarrollo de los libros. Muy interesante.
