Jim Williams clearly suffered during his time in WW I and just wanted to get away to the jungles and to the natural world. He elected to try the hard life in Burma as a Forest Assistant with the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation which milled teak. He would be in charge of the elephants. He had been in the camel Corp in the war so why not? 

So this is the story of "Elephant Bill," as he is come to be called. He forms a bond with the elephants he is in charge of(especially one) and changes the way the company acquires and trains them. He learns so much about the almost mystical world of the elephant and he recognizes the many ways they can be of service to humans. 

He evidently wrote lots of memoirs after his retirement and return to England, but this biography makes use of some previously undiscovered unpublished items that the author was allowed to peruse.
