An improvement on I Take You, but just barely. Every time I started to like Raney she would do something so wildly over the top terrible that I had to take a step back and evaluate myself to see if I’m just TOO in tune with the people around me, which is not something I ever thought I’d have to do as an Aquarius.
From sleeping with people who reported to her directly at work (TWO DIFFERENT GUYS), breaking multiple laws and somehow getting away with it, and nearly ruining her husband’s career, Raney made it hard to understand WHY she had such loyal friends and coworkers.
Much like the previous book by this author, I Take You, there was a sanctimonious speech essentially equating people questioning whether what Raney was doing was morally okay to slut shaming Raney. There’s a difference between “hey, it’s not okay to sleep with your associates at work because you’re in a position of power compared to them” and “hey, it’s not okay to sleep with multiple guys because that’s slutty.” This seems like a big ass line that Kennedy hasn’t quite figured out. Who knows if she ever will? The speeches on feminism seemed basic at best, they lacked nuance and actual understanding of feminism, and once again gave off a very “you can’t tell me I’m wrong” vibe, except this time it was “you can’t tell me I’m wrong because I’m a woman doing things men have done too and they weren’t punished.” Which... based on her examples of guys in the firm that did similar things... she matched, or bested, them at horribleness.
Was there a likable character in this book? Jorge and Amanda. That’s about it.
