Oh my. Oh my my my. I've had mixed feelings about New Adult as a genre for quite awhile, simply because it seemed as though most stories were so dark, twisty, and filled with overly dramatic turmoil. More Than Music is such a breath of fresh air! An NA book that's fun and romantic that I ended up reading in one sitting because I just had to know what happened with Jared and Maddie. Oh and speaking of Jared...anyone with a rocker fantasy needs to read this book asap, because Jared's hotness can only be experienced and not described. I'm still fanning myself from all the heat generated by these two! Loved loved loved this book!

Todo libro New Adult tiene su Becca, esa chica "fácil" y medio loca ex del sexy protagonista, chica que por alguna razón "termina mal" y es la excusa que dicho muchacho usa para alejarse en algún momento de la protagonista. Siempre, pero siempre son usadas como balance de la protagonista, la "buena chica" que logra cambiar al mujeriego e irresponsable. Subliminalmente, o quizás no tanto, meten en nuestra cabeza que una chica así no merece ser feliz, siempre es ÉL el que se redime.

Y es algo que detesto con toda el alma, porque la doble moral con la que tanto escritores y lectores toman contra este tipo de personajes es enfermiza. Elizabeth Briggs corrige esa horrible costumbre en More Than Once de una manera espectacular.

Elizabeth dice en los agradecimientos que este libro no tenía planeado ser escrito, pero gracias a que los fans preguntaron y pidieron por una historia para Hector, la tenemos. Con por favor y gracias, se obtienen muchas cosas, kitten, no lo olvides.

Cuando una escritora de USA dice que uno de su personaje es latino, un lector latino se espera lo peor. De verdad, muy pocos escritores se toman el trabajo de investigar y se van por lo estereotipos, Elizabeth Briggs me gustó desde el inicio cuando (no recuerdo cuál de los libros anteriores) de alguna manera se hace referencia que a Hector no le gusta tampoco eso. Si bien en el libro tiene una que otra cosilla común que se asocia con los latinos, lo que realmente me gustó es que se nota que investigó un poco el idioma.

Usa solo una frase, pero en esa frase podemos apreciar lo rico de nuestro idioma (y del por qué dicen que el español es uno de los idiomas más difíciles de aprender). Es que para una sola frase tenemos un montón de significados. Sobre todo esa frase.

Diversidad

Si bien no son los personajes en sí, Tara en el libro está publicando un comic que no sé como es que no está a la venta ya. La historia del comic no solo es con personajes con super póderes no tan comerciales, sino también con personajes que no se ven normalmente en el cine, TV, libros o comics, y son personajes discapacitados o con cualquier otra característica no comercial. Hace falta mucho de eso, no entiendo como ese comic ya no está a la venta.

Hot.

Es el libro más sexy que ha escrito hasta ahora, la historia es sencilla pero se lee bastante rápido. Esta es una de esas veces que me gustaría saber dibujar o tener algún tipo de talento y enseñarles todo lo que Elizabeth Briggs trajo en More Than Comics, si son diseñadores, léanlo! Me gustaría ver muchas de las cosas que se describen.

No hay forma de que salga de mi casa sin me eReader, sobre todo si sé que con quién voy a encontrarme tiene enormes problemas de puntualidad, aún así, por costumbre, tiendo a llegar temprano, supongo una sutil indirecta a todas las personas que me dejan esperando. Media hora antes de lo acordado, preguntándome si esta sería la primera vez que llegue puntual, decidí comenzar el libro que desde que lo vi me dio mucha curiosidad, a pesar de que era New Adult, no podía dejar de pensar en la portada y en su título "More Than Music." Cuando, luego de que prácticamente me sacudiera para hacerme presente había llegado, me di cuenta de dos cosas, la primera es que había roto su record de imputualidad, y lo segundo, habían pasado casi dos horas completamente perdida en el libro. Sé que quizás pienses que ahora que llegó yo le prestaría toda mi atención, lamentablemente eso también pensó la otra persona. "¿Puedes prestar atención a lo que estoy diciendo?" dijo, yo:

Quizá yo no sea la persona para quedar, y también quizá, solo quizá, llegue temprano porque significa tiempo a solas para leer, generalmente no me gusta leer en público, casi siempre termino tan solo revisando qué títulos ya leí, cuál ya reseñé, cosas muy técnicas. Pero con More Than Music perdí todo la noción del tiempo, y si soy completamente sincera no sé por qué. No es una historia complicada, es la manera en que Elizabeth Briggs me contó la historia, como supo plasmar un amante/freaky de la música. O un freaky en general. Cómo Jared no solo es sexy y talentoso, sino un completo nerd, comics, The Big Bang Theory, música, todo eso. O como Maddie en una ligerísima forma me recordó a mí en mis sueños de música (Sé tocar una canción en el piano. Una. Se me puede considerar virtuosa u.u).

Cómo saben otra de mis grandes pasiones es la música, y este libro está repleto de ella. Me ha tocado a veces libros que dicen ser sobre música y solo mencionan una canción a lo largo del libro, eso no pasa con More Than Music. ¡Hay un montón de canciones! Y los covers *-* Aunque la escritora claramente se imagina la voz y look de Jared como un Jared Leto, yo me imagino más a Jared como una combinación entre Gary Lightbody (vocalista Snow Patrol) y Austin Winkler (ex-vocalista* de Hinder). MY FEELS

Elizabeth dijo que ya está trabajando en más historias, no exactamente con los protagonistas de More Than Music, pero igual me emocionó, me ha encantado conocer su escritura.

No hay escritora con la que esté más al día en con sus libros que con Elizabeth Briggs, me los he leído todos los que están publicados, me siento tan orgullosa de mí misma, es un trabajo duro, pero es un esfuerzo en equipo (?)

ME GUSTÓ SU PROTAGONISTA

More Than Fashion es un libro con una protagonista y narradora que a primera impresión puede ser no agradable, o como dicen en inglés "no likeable", traducción a lo Google Traductor: Personaje no gustable. ¿Por qué? Su personalidad es un poquito... ¿cómo decirlo? ¿Tienes esa amiga que todo el mundo habla mal de ella tan solo porque le gusta vivir su vida y no le interesa qué piensan los demás? La gente sin conocerla tiende a ponerle adjetivos nada bonitos. Esa es Julie, sabe que está muy joven para asentarse con una sola persona, así que ¿para qué complicarse la vida en una relación que sabe no durará?

Creo que por eso me ha gustado tanto More Than Fashion, me ha hecho salir de mi zona de confort con un personaje como el de Julie, además de su sinceridad al "voy a ser todo lo posible para ganar", incluso besar al chico guapo, pobre de ella. Pobrecita, se sacrifica la muchacha.

LA PORTADA

Cada vez que armo una reseña, además de tener millones de pestañas abiertas en el navegador, intento averiguar un poco sobre el libro, y lo que conseguí de More Than Fashion fue que a diferencia de muchas otras portadas pre-hechas, Elizabeth Briggs hizo un photoshot para la portada del libro. Dirás, eso no es raro, muchas escritoras lo hacen. La razón de porqué resalto esto es porque a la escritora se le hizo difícil encontrar una modelo asiática para la portada y ¿una pareja interracial? Le fue imposible. Por lo que decidió hacer su propia sesión de fotos, a mí me encantó ese detalle, siento mucho más personal el libro. Además, el nombre del modelo salió a luz y... puede o no puede lo haya stalkeado.

More Than Fashion puedes leerlo sin necesidad de leer los libros anteriores... más o menos, los personajes que ya conocemos son mencionados, pero muy poquito.

Uno de los libros que este año despertó ese lado fangirl fue More Than Music de Elizabeth Briggs. Es que si juntas las dos cosas que más amo, música y libros, es difícil que este gato se resista al encanto. More than Exes es la precuela de More Than Music, a los que leyeron el primer libro y se quedaron con ganas de saber más de los hermanos Cross, este libro es perfecto porque nos trae más sobre Kyle, además de que vemos lo adorable que es cuando Maddie ve por primera vez a Jared y hace todo lo posible por no conocerlo.

El libro nos dice que aunque chico bueno se vista de malo y se llene de tatuajes, chico bueno se queda y las chicas pasarán de él porque su hermano está más bueno en eso de ser malo. Lo que se me hizo gracioso porque es como si las chicas pudiéramos oler “Chico Bueno” a millas. Y creo que si podemos, sino no habría tantas canciones para los idiotas que son los ex’s. (Esto me hace pensar en Adam Levine, él se ve como el tipo de chico que dejas un día porque es un idiota y al siguiente fin de semana se aparece con su cara de cachorro y juramos que lo que tenemos es amor, bitch)

¿Ven? El chico malo siempre roba protagonismo, hay estudios y todo.

More than Exes es un libro bastante (¡BASTANTE!) sexy y de lectura rápida, así no hayas leído More Than Music se entiende perfectamente. Y creo que hasta sería mejor leer este primero para tener más suspenso sobre si Alexis y Jared logran arreglar sus conflictos y por fin estar juntos.

Once upon a time, I was a complete reality show junkie. You name it, I watched it. The competition shows were always my favorite though. Those days are long past now and the only shows I watch now are So You Think You Can Dance and Big Brother, but I still have a soft spot for reality shows, even if I don't watch them anymore. When I read the blurb for More Than Music and realized the centerpiece of the story was a music competition reality show (a la The Voice), I knew I had to read it. 

More Than Music was a quick, sweet and sexy read. If I gave half stars, it'd be a solid 3.5. I liked the characters and the way the competition show figured into the story. The behind the scenes glimpse at the way the show and its producers manipulated the characters for their own personal gain was pretty much how I'd always imagine those shows would be in real life. The story flowed well and it was angst-free. The characters had good chemistry and their relationship was believable. I wanted Maggie and Jared to get together in the end, but I didn't ever feel completely emotionally invested in their story. It was a very good debut novel and I'm looking forward to continuing with this series.
