**read for medical anth class fall 2020** 

i was expecting this to be another Great Big Book of White Nonsense but it actually wasn’t! which was a good surprise. the authors tackled the impacts of colonialism, neoliberalism, imperialism, and whiteness relatively well for an academic text. i had to read this for class but it was the first time a textbook didn’t feel like a chore and the case studies made it feel well rounded and expansive as well. i looked forward to reading the chapters assigned- my favorites were on dying + the elderly, and personal resistance to medicalization. the authors tried their best to grapple with the rise of biotech as an industry by addressing cyborg anthropology in many of their chapters, which was a nice (and necessary!) touch. definitely expanded my view on marxist-feminist approaches to health, i feel like i’ll return to this again soon!!
