Six of Crows

The Grishaverse will be coming to Netflix soon with Shadow and Bone, an original series Enter the Grishaverse with the #1 New York Times-bestselling Six of Crows. Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price--and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone. . . . A convict with a thirst for revenge. A sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager. A runaway with a privileged past. A spy known as the Wraith. A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums. A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes. Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction--if they don't kill each other first. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo returns to the breathtaking world of the Grishaverse in this unforgettable tale about the opportunity--and the adventure--of a lifetime. "Six of Crows is a twisty and elegantly crafted masterpiece that thrilled me from the beginning to end." -New York Times-bestselling author Holly Black "Six of Crows is] one of those all-too-rare, unputdownable books that keeps your eyes glued to the page and your brain scrambling to figure out what's going to happen next." -Michael Dante DiMartino, co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra "There's conflict between morality and amorality and an appetite for sometimes grimace-inducing violence that recalls the Game of Thrones series. But for every bloody exchange there are pages of crackling dialogue and sumptuous description. Bardugo dives deep into this world, with full color and sound. If you're not careful, it'll steal all your time." --The New York Times Book Review Praise for the Grishaverse "A master of fantasy." --The Huffington Post "Utterly, extremely bewitching." --The Guardian "The best magic universe since Harry Potter." --Bustle "This is what fantasy is for." --The New York Times Book Review " A] world that feels real enough to have its own passport stamp." --NPR "The darker it gets for the good guys, the better." --Entertainment Weekly "Sultry, sweeping and picturesque. . . . Impossible to put down." --USA Today "There's a level of emotional and historical sophistication within Bardugo's original epic fantasy that sets it apart." --Vanity Fair "Unlike anything I've ever read." --Veronica Roth, bestselling author of Divergent "Bardugo crafts a first-rate adventure, a poignant romance, and an intriguing mystery " --Rick Riordan, bestselling author of the Percy Jackson series "This is a great choice for teenage fans of George R.R. Martin and J.R.R. Tolkien." --RT Book Reviews Read all the books in the Grishaverse The Shadow and Bone Trilogy (previously published as The Grisha Trilogy) Shadow and Bone Siege and Storm Ruin and Rising The Six of Crows Duology Six of Crows Crooked Kingdom The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic

I’ve seriously never read a better fantasy book ever. Leigh Bardugo you’ve done it again.

The Grisha Trilogy introduced readers to the irresistible fantasy world of the Grisha - and now the adventure begins again. Leigh Bardugo's writing has captivated readers since SHADOW AND BONE was published in 2012, and THE DREGS will take her fans back into the world they already know and love as she spins an entirely new story set in the dangerous and fascinating underworld of Ketterdam city. As gripping, sweeping and memorable as The Grisha Trilogy, this is perfect for fans of Laini Taylor, Kristin Cashore and Game of Thrones.

It’s hard to believe that the soaring popularity of the Young Adult Fantasy genre, a.k.a., the goliath of the 2010s literature market which birthed big names like ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Divergent’, receives no more than lukewarm greetings at best today. There has not been much hype centered around new releases of YA Fantasy in the past few years (as the current market is dominated, unsurprisingly, by problematic smuts), and that’s why I welcome Leigh Bardugo’s 'Six of Crows' with more than an open arm. Kaz Brekker finds himself high on a sense of triumphant accomplishment, having bested his business rival Geels and the Black Tips in a game of underhanded tactics, at which he is most proficient. Of course, he wouldn’t let anyone see his inner elation and self-congratulatory pat on the back — he has a steadfast reputation as the Barrel’s heartless gang leader to uphold. Nevertheless, his secret jubilation left him drunk enough to be caught off guard and captured by Jan Van Eyck, the wealthy member of Kerch’s Merchant Council, who assigns him an impossible heist worth 30 million kruge. While the payoff is clearly highly rewarding, Kaz’s task is no less daunting. He needs to infiltrate the impenetrable fortress of the Ice Court deep in the icy northern nation of Fjerda and secure a Shu scientist named Bo Yul-Bayur. Bo has invented a forbidden drug, jurda parem, which amplifies a Grisha’s abilities to an unthinkable level. Getting inside these frozen walls was no easy feat, and now, making a smooth exit is crucial. To achieve that, he assembles a team of trusty colleagues: Inej Ghafa ‘The Wraith’, Jesper Fahey the sharpshooter, Nina Zenik the Heartrender, Matthias Helvar the renegade, and Wylan Hendriks the technician. Together, the band of six sets off on a journey of self-discovery and renewed fellowship, where they confront their inner turmoil and the burdens of the past. One of the primary reasons why this book has become one of my favorites is the heartwarming depiction of friendship between Nina and Inej. It grows from a mutual understanding of two girls striving to survive in a harsh world that stops at nothing to take advantage of them. At first glance, they are vastly different individuals. Inej moves like a ghost with the lightness of her feet, trusted with the task of silent killing and undetected stalking. Her strength derives from her resolve to free herself from the debt that traps her in precarious situations and dangerous missions, the same resolve she notices in Nina, who, as a Grisha, faces her own struggles. Nina's lighthearted and sweet disposition brings out Inej’s softer side, and she finds she can breathe a little easier when Nina is around. Their friendship becomes a powerful force that not only aids them in their individual battles but also highlights the beauty of solidarity amid adversity. This focus of their sense of camaraderie is also why I find the story highly enjoyable. At first, they are nothing more than highly skilled workmates hastily gathered on a mission, sharing a mutual goal of accumulating a hefty amount of wealth. Little by little, through friendly banter and mortal danger, they solidify their relationship. They learn to lean on each other and place more trust in their supposed business partners. The progress in their relationship aligns with their own self-development as an individual, where the clashes between the characters also allow them to learn a thing or two about themselves and that in turn, letting them grow as a person. Speaking of character development, the use of shifting point of views is nothing short of brilliant in depicting how each chapter progresses as well as giving each character a portion to finish their arc. It keeps the pace fast and the tension going by utilizing rapid plot development and swift narrative progression, at the same time letting the reader in on the psyche of each protagonist and giving us a real sense of what kind of people they are and how they think. Albeit, therein lies the drawbacks of having a handful of protagonists — sometimes there isn’t enough room for everyone. This is evident in the absence of chapters focused on Wylan's perspective, unlike his other team members. While he plays a crucial role at the end of the book, it doesn't negate the fact that he lacks a presence in the majority of the narrative. Not only that, Wylan and Jesper’s romantic relationship has also been largely overshadowed by other pairings’ scenes. They only shared one real scene of intimate, deep talk where the famous Jesper line is uttered, but other than that, there haven't been any meaningful exchanges between them. Compared to Nina and Matthias, who have a concrete and meaningful advancement in their enemies-to-lovers bond, or Kaz and Inej with their dramatic twists and turns, pull-and-push dynamic, there’s not much to say for Jesper and Wylan. At this rate, their whole situation reeks of queerbaiting at best. I noticed that Bardugo deliberately read books on Victorian slums and the underworld's vernacular to offer an authentic perception of the worldbuilding of the Grishaverse — and I believe her hard work paid off. As we move from chapter to chapter, you gain a realistic portrayal of the steampunk underworld with its brothels, dim bars, and sketchy alleys, as well as how the people live and breathe in a society where magic exists and is (to some extent) ostracized. But, of course, while no literature could surpass Yana Toboso's skills in depicting magical Victorian Europe, "Six of Crows" is still a strong contender to be considered the best YA fantasy genre of the 2000s.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (ish) I liked it. I didn’t love it… but I get it now. The ending? Genius. Kaz being 3 steps ahead at all times? Addictive. That “oh shit” moment when everything clicks? Worth it. But I never fully sank into the world the way I wanted to. I think I spent too much time trying to understand it instead of just living in it.

I loved this book. I feel it's one of the best in the genre I've read. It was a written heist which I have never read before. It felt like you were assembling a gang of misfits. It also felt like the most wild DND adventure going off the rails. It felt like the random wack-ass shit my friends would do in a session. The characters were all very unique and had such interesting dynamics. Nina and Mattais's romance is was so unhinged but I loved it. Nina reminded me of my own DND character HAHA. Can't wait to read the next in the series!

YA novel that got me back into reading (before ib destroyed it again)

Melissa Cometto

Pensavate che avessi finito col Grishaverse eh? E INVECE NO! “Nessun rimpianto. Nessun funerale”

I love the complexity of the characters, their lives, and their personality. Surprise after surprise. Each character’s lives and moments were a pleasure to witness.

really nicely written. I feel very attached to the characters, even when there were at least 2 significant things that bother me about each character (in a good-characters-are-flawed way). love how the characters really feel like theyre seventeen or eighteen like the dialogue is perfect for this. the skills everyone has make sense and arent too far fetched for the back stories given. and i love the romance (even the straight romance... that's how u know it's good).

This was really well written. I enjoyed the complexity of the characters and the banter between them. The actual heists were a bit far fetched but entertaining. In my mind the characters were not 16 and 17 year olds. The banter and maturity just does not fit that age group. Looking forward to part 2!
