Thomas Dalton, intent on making a fresh start in the community, takes a room in a boarding house and becomes trapped in a marriage to one of his fellow lodgers. Earlier versions of some sections of the book have previously been published in various anthologies. The author's other publications include 'The George's Wife', 'The Well' and 'The Sugar Mother'.
