I loved this so much my favorite historical fiction book that I have read in areally long time it’s so good like mystery with romance AHHHHHH I LOVED IT

WHAT is it about this book! it's the same exact thing as CNV where I fully know that there's something missing but the majority of me is absolutely enthralled to the point where I'm willing to give it the full five stars. It must be the character relationships, the sudden bonds formed under pressure where they just come together - it must be the chess metaphor that slipped in at one point (I am an absolute sucker for those). It also must be that I LIKED Stella and Tony and Sebastian and the rest of them. It is disappointingly rare that I fully like YA casts lo l help but for how little we really got to know the aviators (other than S & T obvs) I was surprisingly connected to all of them. (Maybe? Sequel? Perhaps?? But :()

Stella needs to be careful as she navigates her way across Europe’s troubled skies, not least because of her own family background (her parents were murdered during the Russian Revolution, and her aunt and uncle fled to Britain with her when she was only three.) Nevertheless, she is shocked when she witnesses one of the race’s participants using his plane to ram another pilot out of the sky. Early evidence points to the sullen and enigmatic French pilot, Tony Roberts, but he also claims that his own plane has been sabotaged. As events unfold, further evidence points to Stella herself — to outside eyes, it appears that she may be attempting to get rid of a competitor and pushing the blame onto her fellow racers. It’s up to Stella to unravel the mystery before she becomes the assassin’s next victim.

This book is absolutely amazing! I love every bit of Wein’s writing here. The story is so well written and thought through. The character development in Tony and Stella is something else, I thoroughly loved reading how their relationship grew as we knew as we learnt more about them and what they had been through. The political and war context throughout is amazing and the Europe’s young pilot’s race for peace was wonderful.
