He laughed, but his eyes trailed down to my finger, which definitely didn’t have a ring. I hid my hand, unsure what to do with his attention.

Her eyes met mine steadily, and I saw her breath hitch as she stood close to me. But her lips pursed, and she didn’t waver. Ruth’s hand came to rest on my chest, and for a moment, I forgot every word of what she said.

Her touch was electric, and all I could do was focus on where her hand rested against my shirt.

“Come here.” I felt his solid leg press against mine. Knox pulled me to him as if I weighed nothing. Both of his arms enveloped me, creating a cocoon of safety I hadn’t felt in years.

Another rumble of thunder made its way to my ears, but I barely noticed because he covered one with his hand, and the other was pressed to his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart.

“You’re okay,” he whispered. “You’ll always be okay when you’re with me.”

I stared at my father, trying to find the words to tell him that I felt like I was unable to love anyone, that it wasn’t what I was programmed to do. But the words never came out because he was right.

I loved her so much I was willing to ruin a man I’d never met. I loved her so much that I was willing to let go of my company for good.

And I loved my parents. I loved Preston and PATH. Albeit in different ways, but love was love. Love was an emotion.

And for a man who felt numb only months ago, I felt like it was a miracle, brought on by my best friend’s actions, my parent’s warmth, and Ruth’s ability to get me to stop working and live.
