Incredible Stories from the Marine World

i always believe that the best pieces are made by the people who deeply love. bill françois’ ‘the eloquence of the sardine,’ in my opinion, is the epitome of an art wholly created by love.

‘the eloquence of the sardine’ is a nonfiction marine book in which mythology, science, and stories intermingle. goodreads had called it “nature writing at its best” - and while i fully agree with that statement, i would say that this book is also a love letter to the ocean and all its inhabitants. it reads like a memoir, at times - the exploration of the sea is often peppered with françois’ own memories and experiences, which only made the nature writing more vivid, more immersive, and startlingly more real (because how else am i going to be fascinated by the zanders and eels if not by the story of a group of enthusiasts scouring Paris’ underground to catch a glimpse of them?)

in terms of passion, this book reminded me of carl sagan’s cosmos. both are incredibly atmospheric while still being so informative, and it’s apparent that the authors harbour so much love for their respective fields of study. it was inspiring, to be honest - i was never the most diligent student at school, but i thought i would enjoy my modules infinitely more if i were taught by teachers who teach with the passion of a curious scientist. they weave so much of themselves into their research, and that kind of love truly shows.

all in all, this was such an enticing and delightful read!
