“For what?” I whisper, leaning on the door like it might help me catch a few words.

My head flips in his direction. “You’re going to help me literally become a runaway bride?”

Jasper smiles and his eyes soften, creases popping up beside them.

“Why do you have to be so fucking agreeable, Jasper?”

“Because I’m your friend, Sunny. Nothing will ever change that. If you need to bitch about something, even if that something is me, I’ll be that person for you.”

“Because I missed your first professional dance.” He clears his throat, staring at my hands and avoiding my eyes. “I wanted to be there so badly after all the times you’d been there for me, so I went and did something that night to commemorate it in my own way.”

With Sloane the rest of the shit in the world doesn’t matter because when I’m beside her, it always feels right. It soothes me. She soothes me. She always has.

I’m out of my depth with her but this is Sloane.

“Mm-hmm,” she hums, still sucking on her finger, giving me blue doe eyes.

I point at the floor beneath my feet and say, “Lose that fucking ring and crawl.”

He better not break up with her because he has some kind of complex. I hate that in books. They always cry about fearing to lose them and then break up like that's gonna stop them from losing them??? It makes no sense.🙄

Of course, I love her. I always have. But this? Now? I love her so much differently than I’ve loved a single other person in my life.

A truck , a hotel, a snow-covered runaway lane, it doesn’t matter— she’s home.

I burst out laughing as I watch Sterling on all fours, awkwardly pushing himself to standing. Dress shirt stained with red wine. Hair all fucked. And not in a good way.

“You’re dead, Gervais,” he tries to sound tough but everything about the man rings so damn hollow.

We’ve made a spectacle and I’ve got the goddamn giggles.
