Start With Yourself

Was gifted this for a work book club. While I don’t gravitate toward the PR-exercise book genre, reading about how a mother of four resists the cultural role engulfment of motherhood, and refuses to organise her entire identity around her children, was really interesting. EG was at her best in the chapters where she took inventory of the messier things that she sees holding (some) women back. Dissecting the difference between reasonable empathy, vs nurturance that turns into a form of projection and an opportunity to avoid accountability for taking care of yourself. Picking apart the discomfort with talking about money or being seen to operate transactionally. On the flipside, she was at her worst when talking about what kind of boss she is, offering boomer-coded hypotheses about what it’s like for others working in her team. Deeply out of touch, but good for her, I guess!

I try to get something out of books even when I wouldn’t have actively chosen to read them, and was pleased to find some genuinely helpful things to sit with here.
