While it’s not comparable in terms of the effect on life chances, it feels relevant to mention the polluting effect of being racist on racists themselves, and the spreading nature of this pollution, which would also have affected their friends, family and children. I don’t say this to encourage sympathy for racists. I say it to recognise that racism comes with a huge social cost that affects everybody.

Perhaps the only people that escape this social cost are those in power, who are in charge of setting the national tone, curating national mythology and making decisions about the degree to which they’ll encourage the human tendency to hatred.
