I was recommended this book time and again, over goodreads, in person, over random snippets of conversations. And maybe all that furor about it created unbelievably high exectations in my mind or if this was really it. If you habe read Looking for Alaska By John Green, perhaps you will know what I am talking about. I couldnt help feeling how highly overrated I found it. At some 89 pages in my ereader, this one proved to be a quick read. But this short length does not do justice to the themes touched upon. or maybe only it does. Maybe the writer wanted deliberately to keep it open for analysis and feelings. Then again, the intentions werent clear. Dealing and battling with issues of death, loss of a loved one: issues that make you lachrymose because they are irreversible, requires more time to be given on the expression of the feelings. Looking for Alaska is an example of how the loss of a loved one should be grieved. This novel after reading others, seems forced and predictable. There are no happily ever afters, sure thing, but then life is not fair. The plot, what with all tthe Ivy league lingo, was great, but this unfairness and temporariness of life needed to be lamented in greater lengths than this. The father-son relationship was something to look forward to. But the somewhat abrupt ending sought to ruin it too. I will not be afraid of difdering in my opinion and for once, I'd say that this one is overrated, so thank heavens it didnt take up much of my time.

Quick, immediate thoughts after finishing this book:

I picked this book up somewhat absentmindedly. I saw it on my Mother's bookshelf and was interested by the vague, meta name. I almost put this book down within the first twenty pages because of how pretentious Oliver and the rest of the characters came off. The love seemed quick, irrational, and lacked depth. It wasn't cliche, but it was unrealistic to me, so I couldn't get into it. I'm so glad I didn't put this book down though. I finished it in one sitting with a brief break. I was just beginning to like Oliver and Jennifer. The somewhat disrespectful nicknames turned to endearing ones and their sarcastic put downs even became loving. I was just really starting to like them and then it happened. I had no idea what I was getting myself into with this book, I thought it would just be a quick, maybe sappy read. Reading this book without any knowledge of what the plot line was was reminiscent of the time that I started watching Brokeback Mountain as a kid thinking it was just about some guys going camping. I was caught off guard. 
The no-frills writing of Segal was something that I wasn't fond of at first. I craved more details. It's the way that most books I've read recently are composed. Too much detail, some to the point of meaninglessness, or just as a page filler. This book is simple and beautiful in it's simplicity. You don't need those extra details. In the beginning I doubted their love because I couldn't understand it. The rashness or the destruction without much attention drawn to it. By the end I was a wreck, their love was obvious and subtle and beautiful and realistic and envious for those reasons. 
It's a quick read, but definitely one that will stick with me for a while. I don't have any interest in seeing the movie at this moment, but I might in the future.

There were two things that I didn't particularly like, even in the end. One of them is not on the author at all. It actually pertains to the use of "okay" to mean so much more than okay. I'm upset with John Green for this one. Since his books came so much later in time, and at a different level than Segal. I'm sure other authors have used it as well, but I can't think of any other one to reference. I've only read one John Green book, but I don't think I'll be doing it again. I watched The Fault in Our Stars begrudgingly and by the second or third time of Segal using the "Okay's", it became tainted by the remembrance of the movie and John Green's writing. The other negative was Jennifer's, "love means never having to say you're sorry", which is used twice in the book. I know that their love and beings were so intertwined with each other that they knew exactly what the other one wanted to hear and how to handle things, even without verbally communicating. I disagreed with this statement because I don't believe there's anything wrong with being able to admit you were in the wrong and then being remorseful. But I got to the point with these characters that I could understand it from their view point. I just wasn't happy that the saying resurfaced in the last page.
