Another book that claims to be horror/ mystery and is actually about family, friendship, and the importance of honesty and vulnerability. Also, I wouldn't consider this horror at all. I loved the references to heavy metal music, Stephen King books and movies, and, of course, the Stanley hotel. So much of it felt familiar in a nostalgic way. Wurth's prose is beautiful and original and a joy to read.

           I loved it until the end. I thought the characterization for all the characters was excellent. This had political comments, but they fit with the characterization and the plot of the story. I was really hoping this was going turn into a entire series about women who fight supernatural monsters. Then at the very end, it turned out the supernatural monster was metaphorical, not real. I was completely disappointed, because this had been billed by Book Riot as a horror novel. It was a good book, and I did enjoy the story, especially the characters. It just wasn't the type of monster I wanted to read about.

I did enjoy this book. I did find some of the side stories were random (The shining/King references) This had great potential to be better! This was my first native/Indian type of read. I did enjoy it and I would recommend others to read it. I just felt some things didn’t need to be added into the story.

What a slow-building, unsettling read! I  didnt know where this was going, and the ghost scenes were super spooky. Loved the Denver setting, too!

Eerie, unsettling, and spooky. The whole books almost took a dream-like quality for me. More magical realism with bits of horror and LOTs of family secrets. I'm a sucker for books with family secrets. I loved the character development of our main girl, Kari. But who I really wanted to know more of was her mother. She had a compelling life and I would have liked to have more of her past in the story. 

The last 2/3  of the book was both terrifying and sad. Highly recommend this book. 

P.S. I wanted to punch Jack in the throat the whole damn time. Horrible man.

Eerie, unsettling, and spooky. The whole books almost took a dream-like quality for me. More magical realism with bits of horror and LOTs of family secrets. I'm a sucker for books with family secrets. I loved the character development of our main girl, Kari. But who I really wanted to know more of was her mother. She had a compelling life and I would have liked to have more of her past in the story.

White Horse by Erika T. Wurth is an unearthly, family drama that has been masterfully intertwined with paranormal horror and indigenous folklore.  

Kari James is a 35 year old sardonic indigenous woman that feels stuck in her life, trapped by her own unresolved, traumatic past.  Kari begins to have haunting visions after her cousin, Debby gives her a bracelet that once belonged to her mother, who mysteriously disappeared two days after her birth. She is drawn by the visions of her mother, leading her to the gritty truth of her disappearance. 

I enjoyed the narration by Tonantzin Carmelo as she made it easy to differentiate between character and was able to maintain the pacing of the book to keep the listener engaged. The general mood of the story was dreary and unsettling, which lent well to the horror vibes. This book would be good for anyone who likes the eerie, dark feelings of a horror story without the blood and guts that often follow along. This was my first time reading any of Wurth's work, but I very much enjoyed her ability to infuse this story with snippets of Chickasaw folklore and bits of history along the way.
