Much like book 1 in this series the world the author has created holds my interest much more than the actual story. But compared the book one the writing style has improved. Still plenty of telling, but not as much as book one. The plot in both books is a late reveal, which left me contemplating what the story was actually supposed to be about while reading which makes it harder to connect with the characters. If you love mermaid books this one is worth the read for the world alone. Its very well thought out and feels like it could be real.

Similarly to her first novel, Breakwater is art in the form of words. Its stunningly written with incredible prose and vibrant depictions. The way the Errin interweaves multiple love stories is masterful, and we follow - becoming invested in, the journeys of several characters. The stories she spins are compelling, alluring, and deep. The Mer Chronicles series is thought provoking, in the way that the sirens display emotional intimacy, the need for interaction, and the way that Errin tells her stories. I kind of liked not having to follow around Kate all the time in this one. With the introduction of some new characters, the cast could seem like a lot to handle, and personally I don’t remember all of them that did end up showing up, but it was much more interesting than Kate and Gabe and their love story. They were pretty much done telling their story, and now the sirens were having a lot more drama involved that didn’t completely involve romance.

Again, Posvistak narrates this book – which I’m glad that Stevens kept him for the entire series – and does a great job staying neutral throughout the story. It works out that there are so many characters that Posvistak can follow around because his voice works out as an omniscient narrator hopping around from North Carolina and Shaddox. It just works.

The twist at the end was pretty twisted, and I was thinking that it was going to happen so I wasn’t entirely shocked about it, but I liked how Stevens tied everything together in this novel.
