Evelyn Waugh

Invité à Brideshead, la magnifique demeure familiale de son ami Sebastian, le jeune Charles Ryder, étudiant à Oxford, découvre les mœurs et l'art de vivre de l'aristocratie anglaise. C'est au travers de cette grande fresque, se déroulant durant les " années folles " et enluminée de personnages plus excentriques les uns que les autres, que le grand Evelyn Waugh s'est juré de " suivre les cheminements de la volonté divine au sein d'un monde païen ". Humour, cynisme et gravité mêlés font de ce roman, le plus célèbre de l'auteur du Cher Disparu et d'Une poignée de cendres, un des plus purs chefs-d'œuvre de la littérature anglaise du XXe siècle.

Perhans, I thought, while her words still hung in the air between us like a wisp of tobacco smokea thought to fade and vanish like smoke without a trace-perhaps all our loves are merely hints and symbols; a hill of many invisible crests; doors that open as in a dream to reveal only a further stretch of carpet and another door; perhaps you and I are types and this sadness which sometimes falls between us springs from disappointment in our search, cach straining through and beyond the other, Snatching a glimpse now and then of the shadow which turns the corner always a pace or two ahead of us.
