I loved the premise, the description in the space scenes when the MCs were separated from their bodies, and the personalities of said MCs. 

I feel like this could have possibly worked better for me as a novella. Some parts dragged a little longer than other parts.

Listened to the audio with a friend. What a great book. There’s a lot going on here and I was kept on my toes. Fun sci-fi with romance elements. Entertaining and heart warming.

There's a prickly yet charismatic trainwreck who always counts himself for far less than he's capable of, and an idealistic soldier with his ducks always in a row who deeply cares about people as a matter of policy. Maxwell is very adept at teasing out the differences and complementarities between her characters

An intricate structure to this society (the military there) but without ever getting bogged down by exposition. Everything is very naturally revealed.

It becomes a workplace story about working hard even at the little details that may seem unimportant but which actually comprise real change when they're all added together. I enjoy that.  

A lot of plot. A LOT. Multiple twists that turn the dynamics between the protags on their heads in interesting ways

Oh my GOD I loved this book. Gorgeous prose; dynamic characters; great political science fiction. I’ve been looking for something with Expanse vibes since finishing that series, and this fit that bill while also being very much its own thing. Highly recommended.

Briar Rose

I’m a bit shocked that this book gets 3.5 ⭐️s from me but I really enjoyed it actually more than the first one. The plot was interesting and kept a much better pacing than the first book set in this universe. I also think I liked the characters better - there were side characters that were slightly fleshed out that weren’t just the villains or family members. Disappointingly though the main characters were only tweaks on the two from the first book. Also the tension between the couple was just BARELY there. Their love was plausible, but it could have been so much better and stronger when it feels like the author did everything she could to keep them miles apart until the very last page which was also irritating. The book itself felt NA for sure, but the romance was very much on the younger side of YA which is interesting considering this book was definitely marketed as a sci-fi romance. I think she just doesn’t know how to write it and therefore shies away from it which is silly and irritating. All in all though I did really enjoy this book and became emotionally invested in Tennalhin and Surit.
