I'm getting a bit tired of Sara always giving Jeffrey a hard time, as are the other characters apparently. And Lena is still a crappy person, so it's getting a bit annoying to read this series. I'm looking forward to the Will Trent series to be honest. 
The plot of this one was again not that dark, especially compared to the 1st book of the series, so it's definitely not one of my top thriller series anymore.

i really liked this installment but the pacing was definitely the slowest in the series. i love "cult" related fiction so this was right up my alley! also the ending setting up our main characters for the paths ive been waited for this entire series - thank god!!

i feel like it should be noted that this was the least graphic of all KS books lol

OK fine. Just gonna finish a review here like I usually do, then.

It's not that it's a bad book, it's just uneventful compared to its predecessors (in retrospect, I like the 2nd book the most). This time around we're dealing with a religious creep who might have something to do with a young girl who was buried alive. 

I think it's more of a psychological drama in this one, because every single thing a character does, it goes in parallel and mirror another character's life. Some concurring themes here are abortion, domestic violence, fidelity, drug abuse, and faith as in, the faith of God. 

But don't get me wrong. Just because I didn't like it as much doesn't it wasn't great. It's still a top-notch crime/thriller book as it is. It just radiates a different vibe than the ones before, so it was a bit too slow for me. Oh and it's not gory, disturbing, or alarmingly violent as much. 

What I like the most is that this one contained a lot of interrogation, and at some point it felt like I was in the room with Jeffrey and Lena, trying to rip the truth out of the bad guys' throats. Karin Slaughter really did get a hell lot better at writing as the series progressed! 

Again, Lena. For god's sake, can't we just give her a break?

The 5th book in the Grant County series opens in a rather intriguing way, with what I can only assume is our main crime as Jeffery and Sara quite literally stumble into the crime scene. We get to meet back up with the main 3 characters we've gotten to know throughout this series, and see their continued struggles, especially with Lena. My heart just breaks for her.

Lena and Jeffery follow a lead on the missing girl that was discovered and even as a reader the group they speak with just seems very strange, almost cultish in a way. They are tied to the missing girl, it being the family's daughter. Things became more mysterious as the other daughter goes missing. Bodies continue to pile up as the murders go unsolved. A great thriller that left me open mouthed in shock more than once.
