Fever Dream

Distancia de rescate

“A wonderful nightmare of a book: tender and frightening, disturbing but compassionate. Fever Dream is a triumph of Schweblin’s outlandish imagination.” –Juan Gabriel Vasquez, author of The Sound of Things Falling and Reputations A young woman named Amanda lies dying in a rural hospital clinic. A boy named David sits beside her. She’s not his mother. He's not her child. Together, they tell a haunting story of broken souls, toxins, and the power and desperation of family. Fever Dream is a nightmare come to life, a ghost story for the real world, a love story and a cautionary tale. One of the freshest new voices to come out of the Spanish language and translated into English for the first time, Samanta Schweblin creates an aura of strange psychological menace and otherworldly reality in this absorbing, unsettling, taut novel.

The book was strange. It felt more like a nightmare than just a fever dream since it showed a young man chatting to a dying woman. Nevertheless, I found it to be an intriguing read.

My mind was all over the place after I completed this book. I felt lingering confusion as if I were trying to make sense of every detail in a broken and blurry photograph. The concept of soul transmigration, which was definitely fascinating to me, stood out the most for me.

It was unsettling, not because it was bloody, but because some parts of the book made you want to run away and hide.

This is a weird review, I know.

A stunning, dizzying, chilling story that gets under your skin in a big way. You can finish this in less than two hours, and you probably have no excuse not to. The structure/conceit feels like something Roberto Bolano would come up with, but it's executed much more effectively than any of the Bolano I've read. Creepy in the best way.

what an INCREDIBLE scary story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SHORTLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER INTERNATIONAL PRIZE 2017 A young woman named Amanda lies dying in a rural hospital clinic. A boy named David sits beside her. She’s not his mother. He’s not her child. The two seem anxious and, at David’s ever more insistent prompting, Amanda recounts a series of events from the apparently recent past. As David pushes her to recall whatever trauma has landed her in her terminal state, he unwittingly opens a chest of horrors, and suddenly the terrifying nature of their reality is brought into shocking focus. One of the freshest new voices to come out of the Spanish language, Samanta Schweblin creates an aura of strange and deeply unsettling psychological menace in this cautionary tale of maternal love, broken souls and the power and desperation of family.

I would love to hear the publisher's reasoning for changing the title for the English translation; Rescue Distance is perfectly serviceable as far as I'm concerned, and frames the content/themes more accurately.

This, I do believe, should be read in Spanish. Or at least through a different translation. Schweblin’s sick (feverish) prose comes through and the book is plenty surreal, but it falls flat on paper. Formatting is also not sexy at all and is in fact ugly. Perhaps that was on purpose but I think that was a mistake. If you’re a Spanish reader please read this and tell me if you like it.

Finished it in one sitting. Loved it.

Re-read - still great

What the heck did I just listen to??? More thoughts later when I've had time to digest this a little more.

Ben hep en kötü olasılıklara kafa yorarım. Şu an bile kafamda hesap yapıyorum, Nina birden havuza düşerse arabadan çıkıp koşarak ona ulaşmamın ne kadar süreceğini hesaplıyorum. Kızımla aramdaki değişken mesafeye verdiğim isim “kurtarma mesafesi”, günlerimin yarısını bunu hesaplayarak geçiriyorum, yine de hep gereksiz riskler alıyorum.

Kurtarma Mesafesi

aman aman aman.

From back cover.

I get why the English version is called Fever Dream. My head hurts. Also my chest. The suspense might actually be killing me.

Steffi

Ummm what?! I loved everything about this book.
