I did not like this book. I did not see this listed as YA but it's very much YA. I thought there was a mistake in the age (it's hinted at in this book) but that was never revealed. It's weird because the theme of this book is on the mature side! 

Also I thought her naivete was over the top. The author made her childlike and it's creepy. She had no idea what some very obvious things were (I guess in an attempt to make her look so sweet and innocent) but she had great knowledge of other things. It made no sense since she worked in a place where she has a lot of human interaction. Yet she had no idea how silverware worked. She also spent a lot of time in the library, enough that she can do so much, but also not enough (because it's endearing, bleh). She had a photographic memory and the mental capacity of a five year old most times. She taught herself a twelfth grade education when she was only 12. She referred to her age by saying she counted summers. What?! She carries around bags of candy that she cries MINE about. I rolled my eyes when she didn't know how to hang up a cell phone. Girl bye. She even took her stuffed animal to the doctor to get sewn. There is no way she is older than 5. She grew up on the streets not in a stinking bunker!!!!! She had a public job! 

I also felt like the way she was treated for being poor was so ridiculously over the top! Come on. Everything was laid on too thick. It made me think she was just interpreting every interaction in the wrong way (for example a mom tells her kid it's time to go and the main character assumes no one wants to play with her because she is dirty and poor).
