Fire & Heist

Fire & Heist

Fans of Cassandra Clare and Julie Kagawa will devour this contemporary fantasy about a teen were-dragon who must steal her first treasure. But a dark discovery during her heist could put her family in incredible danger. In Sky Hawkins's family, leading your first heist is a major milestone--even more so than learning to talk, walk, or do long division. It's a chance to gain power and acceptance within your family, and within society. But stealing your first treasure can be complicated, especially when you're a wyvern--a human capable of turning into a dragon. Embarking on a life of crime is never easy, and Sky discovers secrets about her mother, who recently went missing, the real reason her boyfriend broke up with her, and a valuable jewel that could restore her family's wealth and rank in their community. With a handpicked crew by her side, Sky knows she has everything she needs to complete her first heist, and get her boyfriend and mother back in the process. But then she uncovers a dark truth about were-dragon society--a truth more valuable and dangerous than gold or jewels could ever be.

This was one of those books that seemed like it would be perfect. I mean, dragons and a high-stakes Oceans Eleven style heist?! That’s right up my ally. And for the most part, I did enjoy reading it. But, there were some that kind of fell flat for me. For one, I wasn’t really in love with the characters. Sky was a solid lead, but she kind of got on my nerves. She just seemed a bit whiny to me. I actually ended up liking the supporting characters a lot better. They seemed a little stereotypical at times, but I would have been interested to learn more about their back stories. As far as the plot itself goes, I thought it was pretty good for the most part, although the end felt a little rushed. But I did appreciate the uniqueness of the story. It’s not your typical dragon story, which I do like. Overall, this book was alright. I liked the plot, but the characters made it a bit difficult to fully invest. I’m glad I gave it a read, but I’m not sure that I’m interested enough to keep going with the series. Thank you to Netgalley and Crown books for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review!

*I got this book for my honest thoughts from the publisher* I really enjoyed this book. I found this book to be such a fun read. I thought he world building was so fun and the magic system was so fun to read about. I found this book to be such a fun read. I really enjoyed the heist/dragon novel. I really loved the lead character so much and just love the heist side of this novel. I thought the various locations we went to was also so well crafted. I also love the complex family dynamics that was featured in this novel. I read this book so fast and it just made me smile. I really loved this as standalone but would love too see more stories told in this world!

This is a fast, fun read. It felt more middle grade than YA to me. It was ok, but not very intriguing. The characters are forgettable, and there's not much going on as far as a plot. I would definitely recommend it for middle grade readers though. I received a copy from Net Galley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

*I was given an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest Review* This Idea of this book was intriguing however the execution wasn't what i wanted it to be. I feel like this would be a great book for a Starter fantasy reader, but not for a seasoned fantasy reader. The concept was such a good idea, i loved the dragon concept and the heist idea. I just wanted more from the book, everything felt rushed and i wasn't a major fan of the writing style. I will also state that i felt like the main character acted more child like than an actual teenager ( she's suppose to be 16 i think). I think if anything this would've been better as a possible middle grade. I say this mostly because i wasn't a fan of the main character, as i said before her behavior was more child like, as well as her thinking. this is also supported by the way her father and older brothers treat her. The romance...i don't even know where to start. I felt like there wasn't any chemistry and on top of that they just didn't seem like a couple, they felt more like really close friends. We got almost no backstory on their relationship prior to unfolding events. Overall like i said It's an okay starter fantasy book, unfortunately i just didn't enjoy it.

I'm not a big fan of this book and now I will tell you why. The Story alone was awesome, I mean it's about dragons (the best mythical creatures ever) but I didn't really like the charakters. The protagonist Sky was not as loveable, I liked her brothers and her (later) best friend Gabriela more than her. Sky has to complete her first heist, in order to found out what happend to her mother. So as I said the story sound really good, but everything happend way to fast and that's a bit sad, especially for the charakter development. Sky stays as a charakter completly the same, and that is really boring because she had potencial. And (for me) the worst past in the story was the complete unnecessary love story between Ryan (the Ex-Boyfriend) and her. The Story would have been better without it.

I enjoyed this book so much. It was funny, fast paced and I liked so much! This is a mix of a heist story set in our world and fantasy, with dragons and magic! The first half of the book is about the heist, and in my opinion the best part. The setting in the second part changes, but I'm not going to say more due to spoilers. I feel that the change in setting, was not explored enough and maybe we shouldn't introduced to it... I liked the characters, the family dynamics and Sky's friend Gabriella! The writing was ok and the world building needed more work! It's not the best fantasy book, but a charming and funny story nonetheless.

I enjoyed this way more than I expected to. Once I got used to the setting (It was almost contemporary fantasy) I got caught up in the storyline and characters and while it wasn't perfect it was a fun read that kept me interested. 3.75 from me :)
