I really need a 2.5 stars because I feel 2 is too harsh and 3 is too many. I enjoyed the Vladimir Tod series but Joss was not my favorite character. I was hoping The Slayer Chronicles would make him a more sympathetic character for me. Instead I find myself horrified at the induction and basic torture the SS (and I don't think it is a coincidence that is the abbreviation for the society) inflicts on Joss. I also find it very disturbing to follow the thought process Joss goes through rationalizing the treatment he receives. I never fully understood why he came to the conclusion his sister needed her soul redeemed. WHY? How does a child come the conclusions Joss does in this novel? The loss of his sister was immense but it just didn't ring true for me. This is a popular title in my library and I will continue to purchase the series but I was disapointed in this book after the quality of Vladimir Tod.
