This book stepped it up!

As is expected with most sequels of books with a great concept, this second in the series is a massive are up over the first and gets more gory and more gritty than the first!

There's more obvious relationships being built between the characters now and the writing continues to have me smiling, whether it's because of humour or just the interesting detail and the phlamboyant nature with which Jim Butcher writes. Downloaded and started the next one already!

I really tried to immerse myself in the story but I just couldn't. The plot was not engaging enough and it was pretty predictable. I kind of guessed who the bad guy is behind all the commotion by a quarter pages in. I turned out to be right. 

It was unfortunate since I enjoyed Storm Front very much. However, I do want to read the next book. I heard the series keeps getting better with the next book so I decided it's worth another chance.

I’d give this a solid 3.5 if Goodreads allowed for half stars. I enjoyed the information about werewolves and the magic, but the whole dying, but not dying, but dying, but not dying thing got a bit boring after a while. I also dislike Murphy a lot. I understand she’s a cop and all, but damn.. calm down.

was an enjoyable read. really thought i wasn't going to continue with the series because throughout time i'd lost interest but when i picked this up i remembered why i liked this series so much when i read the first book.
this wasn't a 5 star as apparently the first book was. it has too many elements at once and it's a bit overwhelming to deal with all the plot twists and random info but i liked the book despite that. 
excited to continue in the series and hopefully it gets even better.

The second installment of the Dresden Files took me years to get around to reading. I carted it through four moves and finally sat down to read it. 

It's the full moon and Harry's up to his ears in werewolves of every type, most of which are hot for his blood. Meanwhile Murphy's highly stressed and highly suspicious. Can he manage to keep himself out of the slammer and stop hordes of werewolves from eating Chicago?

I enjoyed this book much more than the first one. The first one was so painful it really hindered me from reading Fool Moon. What a shame because Fool Moon was quite enjoyable.

But I won't. Because as much as I love Harry I don't have time for this. Because

Wait. You know that fans of this series usually say that it gets better around book 3 and 4. Exqueeze me? Baking powder? You mean the Kate Daniels kind of "it gets better" when you end up giving a 10 out of 5 stars rating? Because so far this is pretty good. Hell, so far this is very good. Oh well, who am I to judge anyway? Everyone knows I have crappy taste in books.

I don't think I'm supposed to be mixing drinks right now. I'm pretty sure there is something else I'm supposed to be doing. Damn. Harry D! How could I forget?! Moving on.

►►► Why I'm still in love with Harry D. ◄◄◄

① He's a disaster magnet. He's the king of worst decision making in the history of bad decision making. He's a total dork. To some this is really annoying. To some this is over-the-top. But I think it's pretty cool. Yes, this is me falling for a guy with huge loser potential (and no dress sense. Apart from his t-shirts. His t-shirts are pretty cool). I'm telling you, the aggravating assholes in my harem can't quite believe it. Me neither actually. A non-asshole with underdog tendencies. And I love him. What is the world coming to I ask you? 

② Harry's magic is VERY cool. And, again, it has nothing to do with his staff. And there's still no pulling rabbits out of hats involved here. Just cool potions and cool magic stuff. With Snoopy tagging along. And Harry chanting to the Peanuts theme music. Very cool I tell you. 



③ Harry still has the coolest friends/acquaintances/pets/whatever. 
→ Murph: she seems to annoy the hell out of everyone. So obviously I love her. She's bad tempered. So obviously I love her. She has very low tolerance for BS. So obviously I love her. She gives Harry hell. So obviously I love her. She's one tough cookie. So obviously I love her.
→ Werewolves! Werewolves everywhere! Werewolves galore! Everything you ever wanted to know about werewolves but were afraid to ask! I LOVE werewolves! RAWR! CLAWS! YESSS! 
→ Hyperkinetic amoebas. Don't ask.
→ And then there's Bob. I'm in love.

Harry Dresden. Good guy private eye, with added wizard. And werewolves. Cynical, tired, and world-weary, Harry bumbles along, walking into peril and managing to extricate himself, and save everyone that needs saving - and the day - at the same time. 

As a story, it trips along. The women are muddy, at best, and really only there to serve as Harry’s love interest. His subconscious gets in in the act. In case one Harry isn’t enough for you. An interesting breakdown on the micro-specifics of the werewolf hierarchy makes things more interesting..

A holiday read. Not much more. More enjoyable than Harry Potter, I’ll give it that.

i’m hoping the weird objectification of women goes away as the series continues, but if i see one more man fat-shaming a teenage girl before eating an entire pizza himself ... imma have to head out.

On the surface of things the Dresden Files are pulpy urban fantasy novels, but having just finished this, the second in the series I'm begining to understand why others rave about them. The world building is quite incredible, especially given I hear it just gets better from here!

It took me a bit to get through this one as it was a very slow read. I thought the first one was better but then again I'm not big into werewolves. The recording wasn't edited very well as you could hear him swallow quite a bit.

Southern Today Gone Tomorrow

This is an okay novel, but I had to struggle through to finish it. Not because it is a difficult read, or even a long read, but because I don't like how Harry Dresden and the other characters are written. Within the first 50 pages I could tell you the ending, if not exactly how they got there, and I didn't care at all about how they got there. I still read every page, but when I went back through looking for a specific scene, I didn't remember conversations I was passing through.

And I despise that Butcher made Dresden a man who thinks he is chivalrous. 

Here is the thing about people who have good manner or who are truly chivalrous: they rarely think about the things they do. Or, to better phrase it, they rarely think about why they do the things you do. When I hold a door for someone there isn't the thought of "oh look, and old person, because I am a good person I will hold the door" the thought process is more like "oh, look, they are about to come through the door, I'll hold it for them." There is no conscious thought behind why I am holding the door. There is a conscious thought behind why I might not act in a polite way when I normally would. But there isn't a thought behind why I do something polite, or kind, other than if I should or should not do it. I could be wrong, but I think men think the same way. Its why some people come off so fake. Whether that is because they are cursing because they think they should, or a guy opens your door after he realizes that is the "chivalrous" thing to do.

Not only that, but Butcher makes his characters so dumb. When we first met the bad guys, I knew they were the ones behind the killings. Yet, they were never considered suspects. Oh, sure, this way we got to meet a whole lot of other characters, but it, again, felt fake and forced.

This is a beloved series. I understand that. And I am going to try to, even if it takes me years, finish all of these books. But I'm finishing them for a friend, and because it is a challenge.

Who would like this book? If you are into urban fantasy, unique types of werewolves, and mystery, give this a shot. It looks like, in the past, I gave this a 4 star rating. I am berating myself for that and wondering what I was thinking.

This IS NOT A NOVEL FOR CHILDREN, a little late, but it still needs to be said. If you are a romance lover, you might enjoy this for a scene at the end, but otherwise, it really isn't a romance. So far, the third book seems to have the most romance and that still feels forced after a discussion Harry has with his sub-conscience in this book.

Tons of fun, but there's the whole problem that lots of description was basically "the breasts breastily bounced down the breast shaped stairs as they were so breasty...oh and a woman is there too". That was very sad to happen.

The 2nd Dresden Files book features a new mystery -- people are being killed by mysterious slashes that don't correspond with any weapon or animal. I preferred the first one in the series, more than this one, due to it's focus on mystery. While this one had that, I didn't feel the same A-HA! moment as before.
