It's a beautiful book! 

The story is a bit sad, but I enjoyed very much reading it. Even read it twice!

I read this because my stepson was reading it for a class in high school. Apparently the class focused mostly on the author, his writing style and his controversial past. Years ago, I read The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales, so it was interesting to think about how these books were similar.

I loved this book for a couple of reasons. First, I like the theme of a sense of right and wrong that is based on a sort of 'natural law' that runs counter to the way that society seems to operate. I also love the backwoods speaking style of the main characters. I'm a real sucker for that. It makes it seem al lot more honest.

I'll remember Little Tree's repeated comment about what his Grandpa thought..."which sounds reasonable." I also enjoyed The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales, although it's not exactly heartwarming or a tear-jerker like this one is.
