Fortuna Sworn
Reviews

OK !!!!!! I went to this book not expecting, and not knowing anything, but omg, I love this book gave me a lot of Sarah J. Mass vibes. We have a kick ass girl trying to find her missing brother. This book is really fast paced reading. We start it, getting to know why she’s by herself and how the world works and when you least expected you’re surrounded by danger and there’s some trigger warning situations some are spoke very lightly like eating disorders, mental health situations like autism. Also if you’re sensitive to rape, there’s a few mentions, not graphical nothing too hard to read, keep in mind that theres sexual content, I really wasn’t expecting the way I went maybe not knowing anything about it I really like the book it was a good revelation, in terms of a new author for me. I bought book one and two just found out that there’s more coming in December this year so I’m just not gonna read the next book so I can have a book each month if this makes any sense. Back to my review.... I enjoyed how the world building And the situation didn’t sound forced, or repetitive, some situations were weirdly fast and like I would like more struggle in them. I recommend I would put this at a throne of glass level of writing and I’m surprised how much about fairies I’m reading this year and enjoying it I would love a Netflix series of this books

DNF at 60% Audiobook version. It was a little boring tbh. I didn't feel compelled to finish it.

i loved that!!!!

I wasn't convinced in the beggining. quite doubtful of where the story was going but it really did get better with time and by the end i was loving the vibes. Fortuna is vicious and i just love it

I DNFed this book but it wasn't because I wasn't enjoying it. I actually was really getting into the romance and the break neck pace. The main character was interesting, smart, and resourceful. I appreciated her. The reason I am stopping is for one reason: I have discovered one of my triggers that I can not handle. That trigger is stock-holm syndrome. I did not know I couldn't handle this, yet I really should have. I also have found that I can take sexual violence in small doses, but I can not take them in abundance. You might have seen that I DNFed Exquisite Captive for almost the same reason. That should have tipped me off, in all honesty. So, yes, I recommend this book. But only if you can handle the triggers. Normally, I can. This was one of the rare exceptions where I felt sick and overwhelmed. One day, maybe, I will pick this back up and be able to handle this. That day is not today.

It’s 2.5 stars for me. This was a poorer version of ACOTAR, there were too many similarities for me to like this book. I loved the writing and the speed of events taking place, but most of the time I found myself cringing. Don’t know yet if I even want to try and read the second book? Ill have to think about this one.

3.5*

3/5 Rating. "the darkness had always been a refuge. A haven. A time when misunderstood creatures could creep from their hiding places and stand out in the open"

In the beginning, I was enjoying it but then I reached a point where I didn't care anymore. If it wasn't an audiobook I would have DNFed it. Fantasy is not for me and Fortuna Sworn didn't change that.

4.5/5 I absolutely loved this book! It was a dark and twisty story that I never found myself being bored with! I have wanted to read Fortuna Sworn since it came out, and I was lucky enough to have received it from K.J Sutton to read! So firstly, I absolutely loved the world created in this book! It was so interesting, and I loved that it was set in the present world, as well as the way includes all types of magical creatures. I think that the plot we followed was intriguing from the very beginning, and although I did get that classic fantasy story feel at times, I still loved it nonetheless! I also absolutely loved the side plots we saw sprinkled throughout this book between different characters as well. Now as for the characters, I really really enjoyed reading about them! I think the main character we followed was a well written mc and I think that all the secondary characters were all strong and held a purpose. As we all should no by now, I am an absolutely sucker for romance and I love when fantasy stories include a romance, and I honestly really enjoyed the romance we followed!! I do think their main storyline was very stereotypical fantasy romance but I absolutely loved it. There is also a potential love triangle? Love duo? that I hope we will see really develop in the second book. Overall, I really loved this book! I read it in less than two days and I just can’t wait to jump right into the second installment!!

More like 3.5 stars It was okay, nothing special. I liked the protagonist but I feel like the trials were just boring? And nothing much happened?

I picked this book up at first just based on the cover since it had drawn me in. I didn't know anything about the book. This is a dark faerie romance. It was slightly slow in the beginning but once you get further into the book it pulls you in. Fortuna is a Nightmare and the las of her kind. She can make people feel and see their worst fears just by one single touch. Fortuna is trying to find her brother who has been missing for 2 years. And a faeire by the name of Collith comes to her and asks her to marry her. At first she denies him but then finally agrees. How ever she didnt know that he was the faeire king and that she would have to go through different trials to become their queen. The story was very well written and fast paced after you get past the beginning. The author describes each character wonderfully. It leaves you on a bit of a cliff hanger and makes you want to jump right into the next book.

So glad I read this before reflexively buying the special editions because….nah. Not good. The female MC is my least favorite kind of lead female character- petulant and childish. The girl who thinks she’s cool because she fakes bravery and thinks using cuss words makes her defiant. Pass. And the whole storyline is essentially a copy of ACOTAR. This is a SOLID YA book with 1-2 spicy scenes which bumps it out of the YA-appropriate world but in all other aspects is not mature enough for adult fiction/fantasy. The storyline is not well developed. The magic system not well-explained. The relationship between our female MC and morally grey male lead has no chemistry. Will not be continuing this series.

I was so excited for this book, but though we did get slight enemies to lovers, I was honestly disappointed. The main character, though I loved the kind of Fallen she was, her character was a little bland in the beginning. This book also gave me major ACOTAR vibes, especially once we reached the second half of the book. I am interested to see where the story goes though because I can't really see where it was going to go or the overall issue of this series.

I'm intrigued. it's like what if ACOTAR wasn't YA...

i loved the characters and the complex relationships they had with eachother. as well as reading a book with a mix of the modern world and the loved ancient world of the fae was refreshing. you normally don’t get to experience both within the same story so that was an interesting twist. fortuna is definitely my new hero as she does what she wants whenever she wants (girlboss). i’m excited to see what is to come of her relationship with collith.

3.5

Fab book to lose yourself in Lovely writing and storytelling makes you feel like your actually there. This is my first book by K.J.Sutton and certainly won't be my last

This was very similar to ACOTAR but I liked the twist at the end so I'm willing to ignore that. I wish there had been more world building.

I'm just so confused. Being honest, this book wasn't really AMAZING or JAW DROPPING. It was just, average. However, I couldn't put it down. It felt like a fast paced, lightweight,, ACOTAR in a sense with some of the story lines. I liked the book and I would recommend it to friends but something just feels...off? Like it went too fast?

this was so good, but I did guess the plot twist pretty easily and some parts/conversations were a little confusing. I am so excited to read the next one and learn more!!

A huge Thank You to Netgalley for giving me an audiobook copy of this book to review! This was an amazing read! Fortuna Sworn, a Fallen, and literal Nightmare, is on a mission. A mission to find her brother, this however has led her to gain the attention of a powerful Fae. This Fae desires Fortuna and makes no attempts to hide this. He offers Fortuna a deal she cannot refuse. soon though she realizes that it may be more than just her heart on the line, but also her life. The audiobook narrator fits this book extremely well and did a phenomenal job! I will definitely be looking up more of her other works. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys political intrigue, a shady love interest, or has read and loved ACOTAR.
Highlights

“Fae males have never worn something to represent their mates, which seemed strange to me. Why wouldn’t we want to announce it to the world? Why shouldn’t our partners have the same expectations our customs expect of them?”

After killing the Leviathan, something within me had hardened. Or just broken.

In my mind, I heard a door clicking shut. Closing on any chance at happiness, on separating myself from this marriage, on the hope that my brother and I could be a family again. “Yes,” I answered, squeezing my eyes shut in a futile attempt to hide the sorrow crashing over me. He could feel it through the bond, anyway. Nothing was private anymore. “I have to. For Damon.”

The words were so blunt, so flat, that it took a moment to comprehend them. I’d known Collith was powerful, but I had yet to see any sort of violence from him. Apparently I’d unwittingly started to believe he was different from the rest of his kind. Now I tried to picture it. Blood on his hands, a body at his feet. Surprisingly, it was an image that didn’t seem like it could ever be reality.

An instant later, the shame hit me. Damon would do it, if I were the one needing to be saved. He wouldn’t even hesitate. But I’d already married a faerie and had the flesh taken from my back. If I did this… it could very well mean my sanity. Wasn’t there a limit to the sacrifices? Was there any line I wouldn’t cross for someone who didn’t want to be saved?

His mother. For some reason, it was difficult to imagine Collith having one like everyone else. I’d been thinking of him as someone that had always been, rather than someone with a beginning. The realization that even an Unseelie King had parents was unsettling.

If he were here, Oliver would urge me to comply. Play the part. Use Collith’s desire. But what about what I wanted? In this moment, it wasn’t even Damon’s freedom… it was mine.

He didn’t sob, or speak, or move. Instead, his tears were silent. The sort of grief that couldn’t be given a voice, or it would become so big, so loud, that it ripped you apart from the inside.

Whenever someone looked at me, they saw whatever face they believed the most beautiful. Like the nightmares that came at night, we were meant to be seductive. We were designed to lure our victims in. Then, when it was too late to draw back, we struck.

Nothing had changed since I left hours ago. It seemed bizarre, even wrong, because everything had changed.
