Fortune Favors the Cruel

Fortune Favors the Cruel Dark Maji Book One

Kel Carpenter2019
Throne of Glass meets Black Jewels in this twisted yet alluring dark fantasy tale. Quinn Darkova, freed from the chains of slavery, wants nothing more than vengeance against those who sold her. But with her dark powers on the rise and her ascension nearing, Quinn's blood retribution will have to wait in favor of her immediate survival. Lazarus Fierté is a nobleman without equal. He's as controlling as he is stubborn, and for the last six years he's been waiting for a woman to appear-but not just any woman. A Maji of great power, capable of terrible things. She could be the key to everything he holds dear. His savior ... or his destroyer. The only thing he didn't predict was that she would become both.

I am genuinely really impressed with Fortune Favors the Cruel! High fantasy books are my absolute favorite fantasy sub genre, and I’m a real sucker for a dark and twisted story. So when you merge the two together and get a dark high fantasy novel???? SIGN ME UP!! This book had everything I wanted and was so refreshing to read! I’ve read a lot of fantasy this year and I will say not a lot of them were dark. This story however, most certainly was. Both of our main characters we follow are dark maji’s who are cruel and twisted. It was interesting to read a story where neither of the main characters were deemed as “good”. I think the characters relationships in this book were definitely intriguing and I MUST see more!! I’m also so excited to see the romance element between Quinn and Lazarus develop as the series goes on! In this book we saw the undeniable attraction they have for one another and we saw how they are both drawn towards each other’s wickedness!!! I loved the plot line we followed in this book as well as the magic system. I think it was really unique and very refreshing to read. I think this book had a nice balance of world building and character driven moments that made the story easy to follow. I liked that through the book we were hooked by untold secrets. There was definitely a level of mystery behind this book that I really enjoyed. Overall, I’m definitely going to continue on with this series. I’m really excited to see how the story unfolds and the characters truths are revealed!!
