JOHN THE BAPTIST

JOHN THE BAPTIST, son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, the forerunner of Jesus, came preaching just before Jesus’ ministry, announcing the passage of one and heralding the coming of another. John began his preaching in the Wilderness of Judea, saying: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matt. 3:1-2) He wore clothing of camel hair and a leather girdle belt around his loins, similar to that of the prophet Elijah.
