Fredrik Backman is truly my favorite author, so I am going to attempt to write this review, the way he writes his books. I'm destined to fail but I will die trying. This is a review of a book. But that is probably not what it is, really. The truth is that writing a review of Fredrik Backman is a little like trying to describe the specific feeling of finding out the thing you were absolutely certain was chocolate, and in Fredrik Backman's words; is actually liver pate. You can describe the mechanics of it. The expectation, the bite, the pause, the slow and dawning horror of realizing you were wrong about something you had no business being wrong about. But the actual sensation of it, that particular cocktail of betrayal and absurdity and the strange aftertaste that stays with you longer than it has any right to, you cannot fully explain that. You have to read the book. So let me try anyway. Anxious People is, technically, about a group of strangers who end up hostage inside an apartment they had no real intention of buying. It is technically about a failed bank robbery, a father-and-son detective duo, a real estate agent having the worst Tuesday of her professional life. This is all true and also almost entirely beside the point. What it is actually about is idiots. We are all idiots. This is not an insult. Backman means it the way you would mean it about someone you love: with the full knowledge that idiocy is not a character flaw but a condition of being a person, of trying to be grown up in a world where nobody has explained the instructions and the instructions would be wrong anyway. We are all trying to love each other and understand each other and figure out how to insert USB cables correctly on the first attempt. We are all failing, in different ways, at different speeds, usually at the precise moment we were most confident we had it handled. Backman knows this. He has built his entire body of work on knowing this, and if you have read anything else he has written, you know that no other author alive describes the exact shape of being a person the way he does. Not the feeling of being human in some broad, inspirational-poster sense. The specific, embarrassing, trying-too-hard texture of it. Anna-Lena's top as a color 'usually online seen on parquet floors.' Or describing the feeling of being uncomfortable like 'when you discover you're starting to share the same taste in music as your parents, or biting into something you think is chocolate but turns out to be liver pate.' These are not jokes. They are the exact right words, and the fact that they are also funny is the point entirely. The characters in this book will rearrange themselves in your chest in ways you will not see coming. Roger and Anna-Lena, hunting for fixer-uppers they do not need, because they do not know how to fix the thing that actually needs fixing. Zara, whose grief has learned to dress itself in other clothes and attend open houses it has no intention of buying. Estelle, who has lived long enough to know that survival, quiet and daily and unremarkable, is its own achievement. Perhaps you will cry. Perhaps you will laugh first and then cry, which is worse. Perhaps you will read a passage near the middle of this book, on a page you will probably photograph and send to someone you love without fully being able to explain why, and the last line of that passage will stay in you like a splinter you have decided not to remove because it is the good kind. There'll be another one along tomorrow. Five stars. My number one author. The distance between him and everyone else is not a gap. It is a different country entirely, and he is the only one who lives there.

Lovely story. Felt warm. Really enjoyed getting to know this hodgepodge group of people. The copaganda was a bit much for me, but that aside, I liked how they played on expectations and biases.

I'm confused where to begin for this book, just like how I was bemused by reading it. I found myself muttering 'what's this book even about?' (Is this also mystery book in disguise) in the early chapter, maybe that's kind of the direction they're going in the first place.

It was reviewed as funny and witty but guess the attempt didn't reach me, and my impression was everyone is just so obnoxious and infuriating sometimes. 

Sure all the people here serve their own story, and it depicted so many issue, problem, that very much close to ours, and I also fond of the writing that sometimes telling the narrative like some sort of story telling and making us imagine when we are in those scenario, maybe cause this book want us to place ourselves in someone else's shoes. 

Among all I love the Jack and Jim story most, and I still appreciate every messages and life-lesson that this book trying to emphasize.

I don't like to re-read the same book twice but I am pretty sure I'm going to re-read this one again in few years time and I'm definitely going to read more of Fredrik Backman. What an extraordinary storyteller!

his writing captivated me so much i felt like i was in the book. all his characters felt so real, and so intricate. i loved everything about them. 

and the plot, while it started out slow and i was a tad confused, the more i read the more i fell in love with the story. i was so immersed. 

i just honestly i feel like nothing i say could be able to describe how much i enjoyed this. 

i didn’t expect to cry either but the ending? good lord i sobbed like a fucking baby.

I cried for 60% of this book, happy tears, sad tears, it’s like getting drunk with a friend and hearing that they actually do love you. Will read again and again and again.

This quote I think perfectly sums up this book. What a beautiful, heartwarming story. I really couldn’t put it down, I was so hooked. Every single character was so dear to me, I loved them all. The way the story weaves between all of them and gets you to care about each of them and their story is so amazing. The author really handled such a large cast of characters expertly, and I felt the changes of perspective worked really well and nothing felt clunky or annoying. I really liked how everything tied together, I felt a real thrill every time something was revealed and I went “OH!”. So entertaining and very funny, I laughed out loud so many times, sometimes because the joke was funny and sometimes because it was so stupid I had to laugh. A lot of the jokes were really corny, and some lines were trying too hard to be quirky or philosophical I feel, but at the very crux of it it’s just a story about community and the human experience and I love and appreciate it for what it is. The author portrays relationships and love in such a beautifully mundane way, I thought it was perfect.

Felt like a bunch of stories all in one and they all connected. Didn't see that ending though. This book was very well written and thought out. Touches a lot of real world stuff people go through. Definitely adding more Backman novels to my tbr.

Anxious People is my first Fredrik Backman book, and I'm already itching to read another book by him (A Man Called Ove sounds particularly enticing). His writing is enriched with life lessons. It can be cheesy, silly, and romantic at times. This book is a mix of mystery, comedy, and drama. Characters were nameless in the first half of the book (i.e. the bank robber, the policeman). As the mystery starts to unravel, so do the characters. This locked-room mystery is fun because readers learn about the characters' backstories while also figuring out what happened with the missing bank robber. Backman distracts us with smoke and mirrors, so when something happens, it's not quite what you expected.

There are many complicated emotions and tones in this book. At one point, a character talks about the economic system, banks, the financial crisis in 2008, the housing bubble, and capitalism. Then, the story will discuss grief, the anxiety that comes with growing up, raising children, and becoming a parent. I think this book is honest about mental health, particularly depression and everyday anxieties.

This book is lighthearted even if it talks about heavy topics. It's about ordinary people who are doing their best everyday and who continue to try again next time even if it feels like the end of the world. Backman's book is a reminder that we all feel and act like idiots at times, and we should give ourselves second chances. We’re all going through some version of anxiety: "we’re looking for something to cling on to, something to fight for, something to look forward to... [w]e all have this in common yet most of us remain strangers."

I recommend this to anyone that's looking for a feel good, hopeful, and inspiring read. It has a wintry atmosphere, so it's the perfect book to read for the upcoming holidays.

Favourite book in a while. Fredrik Backman's writing has a delightfully unserious tone. The twist caught me and amazed me that I didn't pick up on it (there's an obvious tell, but I won't spoil the twist). I'm impressed at the humor especially being a translated text and will make my way around to reading more of his work.
