jada stormed into the room, blood splattered all across her clothes and skin, making the vengeful look on her face all the more frightening. had the madam left? she held a wicked looking dagger, and it dripped scarlet liquid onto the stone floor.

 has learned his lesson now,” jada murmured. “no one hurts my girls.”

panic rose in her chest as she looked up at jack. they both knew what four meant.

it reminded thorn of the old furniture in her father’s house. it was offensive that the blanket smelled like home even though it came from a brute.

“is that who you are or what you are?”

“it’s fine.” she laughed, amused and intrigued by the relationship the two friends shared. if she were honest, thorn wanted to get to know the new shifter. “i would be glad to.”

luca lowered his hand and stilled. he exhaled heavily. “i thought you would say no. i had a whole speech rehearsed. i even had treats to bribe you with.”

“for agreeing. it will settle my mind to have you with us tonight,” luca admitted, his voice gruff. 

her heart squeezed. “i’m happy to help. that’s what friends are for, right?”

“friends,” he drawled. “i like having you as a friend.” 

his expression turned thunderous. “what are you looking at?” luca hissed, the words like venom upon his tongue. “staring at the beast, is that it?”

the darkness was almost welcome. almost a friend. it had taken her mother and father, after all. it had come for her now.

“who hurt you?” he asked thorn, his voice hoarse and cracked from disuse. his hand moved from her scars to her hair, smoothing it back from her face as he asked more questions.

he didn’t even try to stop the sobs of relief.
