A Novel of Alexander the Great: A Virago Modern Classic

i really, REALLY enjoyed this. meaning i couldn't bring myself to put the book down. and personal enjoyment aside, it's one of the best written novels i've read in a while.

the history surrounding the aftermath of alexander's death is something so complex, so confusing and outright difficult to tell, i can't possibly imagine the idea of sitting down and trying to recount it – especially through the lenses of fiction. and surprisingly, that's what renault excels at: giving a voice, a soul to historical figures so distant from us, without tearing down the mirage of both myth and realisticness that such characters require.

the complexity of the subject inevitably creates the risk of ending with an excessively fragmented story. it might constitute a flaw, it might not; personally i wasn't bothered, it gave me an additional thrill to read through different povs, and it reinforced the image of an immense empire crumbling down.
