The Vietnam war is one not taught much (if at all) to current high schoolers. I know I didn't learn anything about it, just that in America the hippie movement and protests coincides with the rough time frame of when it happened. That can hardly count as being taught about it though.
Tran's memoir is a shocking look at what took place in Vietnam while it struggled against France and America. It's a look at the struggle for identity when your parents are FoBs and refugees at that while you are a born citizen. It's the struggle for acceptance and peace, to fight and hold on, a delicate line between push and pull. Maybe I'm becoming a little enamored with the rise in graphic novel memoirs, but Vietnamerica is beautifully done.
