I was provided a copy of Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest is honestly a difficult book to throw a rating on (especially a low rating –). When it comes to non-fiction, I typically rate it 3 or up — depending on my interest in the text. & another reason as to why it’s difficult to rate Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest is because I do not like to undermine what other people believe. When it comes to the paranormal, I am definitely not a skeptic. I love hearing about true haunts & love (also am terrified??) when experiencing my own paranormal occurrences.

With that being said, I had some issues with Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest.

Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest is an account of a true haunt, with several people telling what happened to them during their stay in the house. A majority of the text is written in interview-format, which may give the account more credibility, but for some reason, fell completely flat for me. I understand why G.L. Davies kept it in this format — but, I just couldn’t get into it.

What happened to these couples in the house is absolutely terrifying, I will admit. The spirits who are possibly haunting this home aren’t the nicest bunch — that’s for damn sure. Yet, with the consistent, “people are probably laughing at us…” “what would you say to the skeptics?” & “people might not believe us” really does kind of.. well.. make me a skeptic.

There were multiple times where I would put the book down, and not even feel bad for not picking it back up quickly. Note: I started this book on December 9th, and didn’t finish it until December 26th. 

I would like to say that I did enjoy G.L. Davies providing a list of theories as to what could have happened in the house, ranging from mold to psychological to psychedelics & to, of course, aliens. I felt like this was an episode of Buzzfeed: Unsolved. He really did put time and research into understanding the possible haunt, and for that, I say good job. 

I’m not saying that this account of a haunt is fictional — it’s not my place to say if what these people experienced happened or not. It just didn’t read well, in my opinion. If you’re interest in true haunts, give it a try! It might work out better for you than it did for me! Plus, there are some pretty scary scenes in the interviews.
