One Hundred Years of Solitude

I’ve finally finished this amazingly written novel, and I’m honestly amazed by the whole concept and the story of José Arcadio Buendía and his family, from the beginning to the end. Somehow, the story stayed with me in a way I didn't expect. It felt like someone had injected the characters and their lives directly into my blood. Even when I was trying to sleep, I kept thinking about them, their lives, and especially their names I'm still trying to figure out all those names, if you know, you know. 😭

is deeply about solitude. Every character seems to find their own version of it, through different circumstances and in completely different ways. That idea alone fascinated me throughout the novel.

But the character who stayed with me the most was Colonel Aureliano Buendía. His life is honestly tragic. I kept wondering how he managed to think and make rational decisions while being surrounded by war, politics, loss, and chaos. The way he makes some of the hardest decisions in his life is difficult to process.

And when he decides to start the war again after everything that has already happened, I found myself thinking,

why would someone willingly choose to go through all of that again?

But at the same time, I could understand that he wanted people to have the freedom to live their lives the way they wanted.

That part especially resonated with me because it reminded me of today's world. There are so many people who spend their entire lives trying to make sure their families can live peacefully, while they themselves are stuck in toxic environments, surrounded by people who are constantly thinking about their own interests and benefits. And honestly, there is something very sad about that.

I don't want to give away too many spoilers, because I think this is a story you should experience yourself.

It's strange, complicated, beautiful, confusing, and somehow all of those things at the same time.

And yes, I've already started watching the adaptation and finally, I'm beginning to understand the Buendía family hierarchy. 😂
