for the first time since losing his faith, he felt the urge to pray. he went to the oratory, trying with all his strength to recover the god that had forsaken him, but to no avail. disbelief is more resistant than faith because it is sustained by the senses.

           i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: márquez is truly a gift. 

it is clear that he was heavily influenced by his homeland and its history. not only does the book explore the historical rivalry between faith and reason, and how they both can be toppled by love, but it also evaluates and critiques the unnecessary dangers that arise from cultural differences. 

this story is tragic, it is grotesque and i absolutely adore that.

The entire time I was reading this, I wasn't really sure if I was understanding the point of the book, but I was highlighting lines as I went along, and flipping back through them, I feel like I got quite a lot out of it upon reflection. 5 stars, it managed to capture me in less than 150 pages

Surreal. Fantastic. Garcia Marquez at the peak of his ability to engross the reader. It is a terrible, terrible world at work here, and Marquez weaves his tale with a mastery gifted to very few.

Gabo è venuto in mio aiuto anche questa volta.
Perché avevo un disperato bisogno della sua magia, della sua follia; disperavo per i suoi personaggi insoliti, tremendamente matti, dannatamente umani; necessitavo dei suoi paesi dimenticati da Dio, abbandonati, le cui case cadono in mille pezzi e le cui persone sembrano più rovinate di queste. Avevo bisogno di cambiare universo. Dovevo partire e andare lontano, il più lontano possibile, di tornare in luoghi desolati in cui esistiamo solo noi: io e Gabo. Ed è stato lui, scrittore del mio cuore, autore della mia anima, a strapparmi dal tremendo blocco del lettore in cui mi trovo da fine gennaio, mesi in cui non ho fatto altro che leggere brevi libri senza sentirmene saziata. Finalmente ho ritrovato la chiave giusta.

Magia.
È questa la parola che associo a ogni libro di Màrquez. E, con questo romanzo, ho chiuso la sua Triade, letta nel giro di tre anni (per primo Cent’anni di Solitudine, di cui sento una fortissima mancanza, letto nell’estate del 2020; poi L’amore ai Tempi del Colera, che mi ha fatto ufficialmente innamorare di Gabo, letto a gennaio 2021; e ora questo, letto sul finire dell’inverno, dopo che nell’estate del 2021 ho letto Cronaca di una Morte Annunciata).

Márquez once again proves his ingenious storytelling and his otherwordly ability of creating such an atmosphere of magical realism that you are not entirely sure what you have read but you know it was profoundly impactful. I found myself fascinated by the story he had crafted in this book, and although it has less pages than his more monumental works, it is no less brilliant.
