A fascinating read which ever expanded my respect for the revolutionary man, yet despite the title, focused little on the insights of his daughter beyond letters regarding standard feminine affairs of the period.

Great humanization of Galileo -- this is the book's best part, for me -- like when a holy relic of pottery in a museum becomes a cup from which you would like to take a drink. Iconoclasts don't always set out to change the world, and The Greats weren't unrelatable geniuses, untouched by human needs.

That being said, this book is probably my least favorite of Dava Sobel's typically excellent work. Maybe it was because I was listening to the audiobook instead of reading, but the pieces never solidified into a whole for me.

When writing academic annotated bibliographies (brief book reviews) I evaluate whether the author proved his thesis. If I evaluate this book the same way I would have to say no. This book was long and meandering with no clear direction. The subject matter was fascinating and relevant to classes I am taking currently. I wanted to like this book but couldn't. For a book named after Virginia Galilei it spent very little time discussing her. This title makes it sound like it's her biography. It's not. It's her father's. Unfortunately I would not recommend this book.
