…and I was struck again by the asymmetry between a patient and those who cared for them. Olivia said goodbye to patients all the time, after shepherding them through whatever crisis – she was used to it. But for me, she was singular. She had cared for me in a way no-one ever had. I was attached to her. 

And what could I say, now that she was passing me on? It’s like teaching, I guess. A relationship that engendered intensity but had transience built in, so that a sign of its success was its ending.

A great book for anyone curious about the Free Luigi movement or in need of a reminder to love being alive
