had such a long journey with this book bc i accidentally started listening to the abridged version and got about halfway through before i realized it was the abridged version... now why would i read the abridged version of a book that is not for school! anyway, the full version was a little difficult to get through because there were soooo many characters who were all referred to with multiple different names, so if i stopped paying attention for like one second, then i would not be able to keep track of who was doing what anymore; in terms of that, i think it would have been better to actually read this book as opposed to listen to it. glad i persevered to the end, but i will say i do think this book was just Fine. there is definitely an anti-semitic scene that lasts about 10 minutes, and the way one character from spain is talked about is kind of off, though spain is a Colonizer of many many countries, so in terms of power dynamics idk if it really matters all that much if we make fun of them lol. still, the way heyer was able to wrangle such a vast cast of characters who all have their own unique plot lines was pretty impressive and made for a fun read, though i think sophy and charles's relationship was a little underdeveloped as a result. i could definitely see the seeds, but the ending still felt rather abrupt to me. i would say if anyone is reading this for the romance aspect, maybe they should look elsewhere. well, onto the next!

One of my favourite Heyers ♥

This is officially one of my favorite books ever. I loved Charles' character arc. It begins by showing how he is viewed by his family, and then you gradually see more inside him and what makes him the way he is and then the ways Sophy brings out the good in him. This book is a fascinating study in personality and character and how each character understands and responds to the others. It's brilliant and hilarious and riveting. I can see this being my new comfort reread.

laughs all around

The (usual) censored version of this is great, but I've heard there's an uncensored version with an anti-semitic scene, eww. So sadly this can't be recommended.
