2.5 stars. It was okay but I didn't like it enough overall. I found Doireann's own story very compelling but I failed to understand her fascination for Eibhlín Dubh so I found all the parts of the book which told Eibhlín's story quite lacking and dull and found I couldn't connect with it.

4.5 rounded up. the writing was beautiful and the structure (essay meets autofiction meets an exercise in translation) was really nothing like i’ve ever read before. ni ghriofa’s prose is honest and tender at the same time, framing lots of candid depictions of motherhood. the one thing i had a slightly hard time with was understanding the origins of ni ghriofa’s obsession with ni chonaill’s caoineadh, like i wish there was more history there!! otherwise, loved and will remember this one.
