This book was okay. The writing wasn't terrible, I just think the story wasn't for me. I listened along with the audiobook, and I feel like that probably detracted from my enjoyment.

This was a good book with a good atmosphere. But I was expecting more a creepy spooky ghosty story and I think this was more of a family drama with ghosts. The drama is still very interesting and this has probably the only love triagle I have ever enjoyed, because it actually makes sense and it's not predictable (and it is not the main focus of the story). Plus the characters are very well round. I think what makes me give it a 3 stars, besides the fact that I was hoping for another kind of story (which it's totally my fault) is that some things were a bit stretched out (like the main character having a feeling for no reason at all but it always turned out to be right) and the fact that barely anyone was open about anything, which I guess served the plot but sometimes it was a bit too much imo. Still, I recommend it!

This wasn't wholly what I was expecting. I really enjoyed the story and the atmosphere, but the characters didn't really work for me.

This was a really atmospheric read, just the right level of creepy for me as I'm not a horror fan. The characters were all really interesting, I loved Shady and how she was dealing with so much all at once. The story was very well paced and flowed nicely. The slow reveal of the truth as the story progressed was also well executed.

4.5 stars.

Sawkill Girls meets Beautiful Creatures in this lush and eerie debut, where the boundary between reality and nightmares is as thin as the veil between the living and the dead. If I could have a fiddle made of Daddy’s bones, I’d play it. I’d learn all the secrets he kept. Shady Grove inherited her father’s ability to call ghosts from the grave with his fiddle, but she also knows the fiddle’s tunes bring nothing but trouble and darkness. But when her brother is accused of murder, she can’t let the dead keep their secrets. In order to clear his name, she’s going to have to make those ghosts sing. Family secrets, a gorgeously resonant LGBTQ love triangle, and just the right amount of creepiness make this young adult debut a haunting and hopeful story about facing everything that haunts us in the dark.
