Gone Girl

I've watched the movie a million times but never read this, so I thought it would be a fun brain off summer read (and good research for my own thriller), but I actually ended up having a lot of thoughts about it. Something about her writing style doesn't work for me here - it feels over long and a little bloated. I think she is a lot more precise in the screenplay (I always love it when authors write their own adaptations!!!). I think that format allowed her to really hone in on what she was saying, so while the book is fun the movie is KILLER.

On the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick's wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police immediately suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they aren't his. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone. So what did really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife?

Wow, what a great thriller! You never knew where the author was going to go next with this book. My only disappointment is that there really isn't an end to the story - perhaps it will be continued or perhaps we are left to our own devices to come up with whatever will be the next scheme in the life of Amy and Nick.

This reminded me a lot of the Steven King's Misery book. You were always slightly scared to turn the page to see what horror would occur next.

Definitely a recommended to read thriller!

unlikable characters, intriguing until the end. Seems like it would be an entertaining movie. I definitely wouldn't say this is the best story ever, but entertaining for sure. Maybe a solid Lifetime movie.

I’m glad I didn’t read Gone Girl in my early 20s like I originally wanted to. I honestly think I would’ve found it boring back then. Reading it now, in my 30s, the book feels much more relevant in ways I didn’t expect.

Not because I relate to the extreme actions or the psychological games, but because I understand the contradictions in relationships a little more. The disappointment, resentment, distance, and confusing ways people can care about you while still hurting you. The feeling of realizing someone is emotionally complicated, or seeing patterns in them that seem inherited, almost like they are becoming versions of the people who raised them.

Some parts of the book felt uncomfortable in a familiar way. Not in the sense of “this happened to me,” but more in the way that relationships can become morally messy and emotionally conflicting. I’ve known people who were caring yet distant, sincere yet contradictory. Gone Girl exaggerated those dynamics, but the emotions underneath still felt familiar to me.

I also realised the book matches quite closely with how cynical I currently feel about love. That might sound harsh, but I think age and experiences sometimes make you more aware that relationships are not always built only on affection. There are expectations, disappointments, compromises, selfishness, and versions of ourselves we show to each other.

I didn’t enjoy reading pages of spouses complaining about one another, but I appreciated the perspectives. That’s probably what surprised me most about this book. Years ago, I would’ve dismissed it. Reading it now, I understood it.

Deeply psychologically twisted, but still wildly engaging! Flynn is an expert writer, forcing her readers to pick a hero when every character is either spineless or psycho. Loved it!
