Kinda silly, really sweet. From reading the synopsis I wasn't really sure I would enjoy this one but I'm glad I gave it a chance. Though it does take a little while to get going, I appreciate the balance between romance and plot.

I can't decide if I liked this or not. ππ The story was taboo dead friends widow, meets military, meets hockey romance. I usually love all of these tropes but I felt like they were trying to mush too many together and it was a miss for me. I loved the main female and male characters and the surrounding supportive characters. The steam scenes were good. Like I was driving a long distance while listening and more than once I'd get goosebumps. I will be continuing on the series. Book free on Spotify.

*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review* Levi Hunt is the latest signing of the Chicago Rebels, a very unconventional Chicago-based hockey team. But Levi isn't just any player: at 30, he's the oldest rookie in hockey history. He had the opportunity to be a professional earlier, but chose to join the army instead, where he spent the last nine years of his life as part of the Green Berets, the United States Army Special Forces. Jordan Cooke is trying to make it in the world of sports journalism and Levi is her big break. After all, they know each other, so it will be easier for her to get the scoop no one else can, as he refuses to talk about anything other than hockey. But it won't be as easy as it seems... After all, the last time they saw each other was on the day of her husband's funeral, Josh Cooke, who was his best friend in the army, when she and Levi kissed. Neither of them has forgotten that day, or that kiss, and both blame themselves for what happened. For Levi it is particularly difficult, since he's liked Jordan since he met her. The same night she met Josh who, while Levi pondered whether or not to talk to her, went to talk to her. He can't help feeling guilty about cheating on his friend and that's why he's cold and rude to Jordan when she ends up in charge of writing a story about him. But Jordan doesn't quit and, little by little, ends up knocking down his defenses. And she finds that there are many more layers to this man than it may seem at first. In fact, heβs a dream subject for any journalist. Unfortunately, he doesn't want her to post anything about it ... As they get to know each other better, the feelings between them deepen. However, if their relationship goes public, it will be the end of her career. But can she resist the scoop of her life? And can he forgive her if the truth comes out? I really enjoyed Good Guy. It was great to see characters from the Hot in Chicago series, and I am really looking forward to reading the Chicago Rebels series, as many of their characters appear here too. And I was left feeling very curious about them... It was a promising start to a new series, and I suspect I already know who the protagonist couple of the next book will be. And if Iβm right, itβs going to be good! COYER Scavenger Hunt: Read a book by an author youβve previously read and given 5 stars.

So I was pretty much all in for this romance until I hit the last quarter or so, and it devolved from there. I loved the romance and how tenderly the aspect of Jordan being Levi's best friend's widow was handled. While a big part of the plot, it wasn't really angsty and overwrought. Levi has always been in love with Jordan, she was firmly in love with her husband, he died, and it is now five years later and she is ready for her life and finding new love. Okay, romance is great, check. That said, I did not like how Jordan acted as a reporter. I felt she was very unethical and acted in a way contrary to what she was hoping to achieve as a female sports reporter. It is one thing for her to have feelings and start having sex with the subject of her assignment (Levi), which I felt was handled kind of okay, but a whole other thing for to be hiding in bathrooms to spy on the owners of the hockey team she's embedded with. Plus, if you are going to be exposing the sexism, harassment, and trolling women face while trying to do their jobs, maybe stop with the butt jokes about one of the young rookies on the team? I recently read a different romance featuring a woman reporter who is asked to do a piece on her ex, and that story was miles ahead in making me feel like the profession was being depicted correctly and respectfully.

When I read the Chicago Rebels series last year, I knew I wanted more from this author. I was really hooked with her books! I do have to say that even though I completely enjoyed this novel, Kate's touch was missing (this seems to be the case with other authors as well). The man was a robot. One with deliciously kissable lips, but a robot all the same. Levi Hunt could have been high on the Hockey fame years ago, but he preferred to join the Green Berets and serve for his country. It was there he met Josh and Jordan. From the start, he'd always scowl at her and "couldn't stand" her, according to Jordan. Now he's back to join a hockey team again and he has to prove he's good, no matter the years off the ice. Jordan is ready to get her big break in sports reporting. And since she knows Levi, her boss sends her off to do an interview with him. Of course he liked her--that was the fucking problem. It had always been the problem. He'd been holding on to this guilt he'd felt for betraying Josh, not just the night of the funeral, but all the nights before. Lust in his heart, someone had once termed it. This was a quick and enjoyable read for me. We get to see some of the characters from the Chicago Rebels series, which was really cool. This book, while being light, also brought various topics into the mix, such as homelesness, bullying, sexism in the work place, domestic violence, and the list goes on. I honestly liked that the author included these topics, but it got to a point that it was too much. In every conversation had, one of these topics had to be brought up and it felt like it was more of a filler than anything to keep the story going. Other than that, the romance was super cute and I adored Levi Hunt. I also loved his relationships with his teammates, especially Theo aka SUPERGLUTES! Theo had me laughing my ass off so much in this novel. I can't wait for his story and Sergeant Cupcake. I know it will be a hilarious, yet heartwarming story.
