There's a scene early on in the pilot of The Greatest American Hero (1981) where Ralph Hinkley gets the attention of his class of "unteachables" by tossing a chair into the middle of the room. I see teacher Zachary Kermit as a burned out Hinkley. At the start of his career one of his students was part of a cheating ring. Since the student was the son of the mayor, Mr. Kermit was thrown under the bus. He and his career have never recovered.

A somewhat predictable offering from Gordon Korman with the usual redemption and transformation to be found in education of either teacher or student or both. Some funny scenes and I can see it being read but not by the G8's I know! I'm not sure about the pitching of it - there's a lot of adult angst and motivation going on, but somewhat unrealistic backing - a student cheats and the teacher takes the blame is a rather strange backstory.

In the multiple-narrator format that Gordon perfected in Ungifted and Supergifted, this book tells the story of Greenwich Middle School's class SCS-8, a.k.a The Unteachables! The Unteachables are a wayward medley of characters: Parker the dyslexic farm boy; Aldo, who is perpetually angry; Elaine (rhymes with pain); Barnstorm the jock; Rahim the sleep-deprived artist; and Mateo, lost in fantasy worlds. Plus Kiana, who is just in town visiting her dad and isn't even registered with the school. Not to mention their teacher, Mr. Ribbit - er, Mr. Kermit - who remains in disgrace after a 25-year-old cheating scandal and is just killing time, doing crossword puzzles and waiting to take early retirement at the end of the year. Are they really incorrigible, or is it possible they are just misunderstood? This unlikely group of heroes is about to find out for themselves.

I loved this book despite all the inaccuracies inherent to actual schools. Does everyone who reads a book set in their chosen profession find it incredibly easy to point out all the inaccuracies?

Even with that, I loved all the adorable characters and the feel good story that Korman told.

Mr. Zachary Kermit has been teaching for years and is looking forward to taking early retirement at the end of the school year. Ever since one of his students sold test answers to other students in 1992, Mr. Kermit has been considered a poor teacher, and he has worked at living up to that reputation. Now, in an effort to fire him prior to the end of the school year and deny him his pension, the superintendent has assigned Mr. Kermit to the classroom known as The Unteachables. Known as Mr. Ribbit by the students, he spends his time reading the newspaper and doing crossword puzzles, but even Mr. Ribbit can't completely extinguish the students in his quirky class.

The Unteachables features an interesting class of students with diverse backgrounds and problems. Some of the situations in the story are a little over the top, but they are all hilarious. The humor in the book can be appreciated by all, but educators will find this an especially fun story. The characters are well developed as we discover more about the learning issues of each student. Overall, The Unteachables is a very entertaining story with solid messages about the world of education. 4 1/2 stars.
