Thirst Trap

i feel like when people talk about the literary device of having someone 'haunt the narrative', it's always in the context of extreme fantastical narratives or high drama. this novel was interesting because it shows the haunting impacting just like. standard day to day. like your quirky sitcom cast but if there was a dead best friend sized hole in the mix. interesting display of different ways to navigate grief and all the emotions that accompany it. appreciate that lydia is not just some perfect canonized entity but rather a source of both anger and sorrow. 

strange thing to pick on as i am again not a romance girl but i found the love interests almost too convenient? just seemed like obvious catalysts to necessary personal growth for some of the characters. not that i find this unrealistic but at some points they seem less like fully fleshed out side characters and more like. ghost of christmas past. does this make sense? obviously aware that there are some grievances and areas of growth that can only be triggered by new interpersonal dynamics, and did quite enjoy them, but felt i could have enjoyed them 

anyways this was delightfully messy and complicated and yet dreadfully honest. long life grief, and long live girlhood.

Genuinely funny a lot of the time but the characters do a little too much coke to be relatable for me
