i reread everything from ancestral hall to somewhere in the extras and i was just as obsessed as the first time. maybe they should let mxtx attain immortality

this book's downfall is having way too much sex at the end with no active ongoing plot to provide tension or meaning to it. like I do so hate to see happy couples happy. but other than that everything involving yanli is beautiful and tragic and that was the best part 2 me 💔

This book doesn't just offer you a story to read, it's an experience. 

I must start off by saying that the novel is arduous to get into for those unfamiliar with the genre, Xianxia or with almost each character having multiple names & titles. I suggest reading a 'guide to' before getting started.

The is a fantasy, crime, thriller romance with characters that are multi dimensional and extremely easy to get attached to. Each of them has their own story, and none outright shown to be right or wrong. The transition between the past and the present kept things interesting. 

Taking one star off because the last few chapters seem to lack in quality when compared to the rest, it almost felt like fanfiction of the author's work.

mxtx is really so good at worldbuilding. i usually get exhausted and overwhelmed while trying to familiarise myself to a new setup, but the honest and consistent humanity aspect of it made it so seamless. albeit i had the greasing from having watched the tv adaptation, and i probably wouldn't have gone through this in its entirety if not for that. and this is also not to say that this was a perfect read. of course, in translations, while i deeply respect and appreciate the effort and commitment put into it, there always remains a gaping hole in stylistic consistency, nuance and the original intention, especially with a wordcount so foreboding. but the story and characters and their interactions are gripping enough to compensate and carry you through it all. language is a barrier but we are still all people in the end and that binds us.

in comparison to the show: personally, i think a ranking is difficult to determine but i might as well admit my bias towards the show and the cast. but the novel did add to the experience and enhance it dramatically by filling in certain gaps, so it's so interwoven as a story i guess it's hard to draw a hard line at this point. though i have to say, i think, despite the lack of open acknowledgment, i loved the cql wangxian in a manner different than this. i couldn't entirely overlook the yaoi-ish writing of the characters in certain segments of the story, despite having skipped and not even acknowledged the infamous incense burner extras. especially lwj because repressed aggression is not my favourite trait on men, and the cql version of him was simply perfect to me. but i was also frustrated by the show's end? and i also need them to kiss and confess hello. so i will pick and select the moments i want from both to create my own version of canon, the consumer's liberty!

i cannot believe i read this in a little over a week. i am god.

I read this because I wanted to watch The Untamed on Viki and realized it was based on a book. I had to read the English translation online, which is a bummer. However, it was worth it! I loved the plow and all the actions. The different relationship and character developments are extremely interesting and beautiful. I literally want to reread already because I don't want to leave this world. I am looking at other works by this author. We will see!

BTW.... I wish the show would have used the actual relationship instead of eluding to them and there were some major difference, but they were not horrible if anyone was wondering. I liked it's story line as well and willing to rewatch!
