I had high hopes that I would be excited by this collaboration between Grant Morrison and a group of Indian creators. While I don't love Morrison's work, I am always looking for more diversity in what I read, so I was very interested in this graphic take on an Indian myth, Mahabharata. Unfortunately, the book just wasn't for me. The art is beautiful, but the story can be summed up as a bunch of dudes are about to go to war. They posture a lot. Then there's some beat-downs. Oh god, there's 17 more days of this? I don't really enjoy books that are all about battles. I find battles to be boring unless the author gets deep into strategy and the human loss resulting from such situations. Just watching people bash each other (or prepare to do so) is a snoozefest for me, but obviously not for everyone, so others will probably be much happier about this book than I was. The re-imagining is interesting, with technology and magic (or just really advanced tech?) being thrown into the plot. It's visually very well put together, but really not what I like reading about. Alas! Hopefully the Morrison name will draw in lots of interest as I do hope this team gets a chance to tell their epic. I just won't be picking up volume 2.
