This book started out beautifully and tragically compelling, but then in the second part, it fell flat. Part three opens with the aftermath of the ending in part two which is supposed to be deeply traumatic for our main character (or at least have some emotional impact considering it’s the first time he killed a man) but I just felt no emotional investment in any of the involved characters. The ending also was just so rushed, and so illogical that it killed any awe I had from the first part

The book is also written in a very descriptive way, which isn’t bad, but there is just not a lot of description about the characters’ character (honestly if you swap the names it makes no difference). There is next to no character development which is strange considering how long it follows Aziz and everything he goes through. So although this does offer a (somewhat simplistic) view of the war in Afghanistan in the early 2000s in story format, you might as well read some good newspaper articles (or Khaled Hosseini’s amazing work).
