If You Tell

Yall this book has been on my TBR for ages and I finally got around to reading it and let me just say wow. I have never heard of this case and my jaw was just on the floor the entire time and I couldn’t put it down

This story… I honestly don’t even know what to write in this review. It is so sad, tragic, and honestly rage-baiting for me. Like, how the f*ck did Dave do all these things to his daughters and his nephew Shane? Holy shit. I seriously don’t know how he kept doing things while acting like he was right, and like his wife was also doing the right thing. I know everything Shelly did with her daughters, Kathy, and Ron. It’s like she just kept telling everyone what to do, and every single person followed whatever she wanted.

I don’t understand how they managed to keep obeying everything Shelly told them to do. I know she is their mother and wife, but they still have their own brains, right? A mother’s relationship is important, but the life they were living, their mental state, and the psychology of all the daughters, Shane, Kathy, and Ron were completely fucked up. Their entire childhood stayed trapped in trauma. But at least in the end, they managed to go to the police, and that was genuinely great because they were able to save their little sister from a similarly traumatizing future, at least a little bit. And Dave… I genuinely don’t think I can say a single good thing about that person. This story was completely rage-baiting for me lol.

After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now.

For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined. Even as others were drawn into their mother’s dark and perverse web, the sisters found the strength and courage to escape an escalating nightmare that culminated in multiple murders.

Harrowing and heartrending, If You Tell is a survivor’s story of absolute evil—and the freedom and justice that Nikki, Sami, and Tori risked their lives to fight for. Sisters forever, victims no more, they found a light in the darkness that made them the resilient women they are today—loving, loved, and moving on.

Written with a unique but strange perspective… sometimes confusing timeline, weird quote inserts in the middle of what feels like a story. It was good though. Entertaining, but very heavy stuff, for sure. Really sad.

Ugh. A gripping story about a crime I was wholly unfamiliar with, but I found it poorly written, extremely repetitive and a bit insensitive to the victims. It tells the story of the extreme abuses suffered at the hands of Michelle Knotek, from her childhood in the 1960s all the way through to her arrest in 2004. Along the way, everyone suffered, including her children, her nephew, and her "best friends". Some issues I had; why did every single chapter (there were literally 85 of them) need to end in some cheesy, dramatic cliffhanger? Just in case you forgot, you were reminded every five pages or so that Shane, Michelle's nephew, thought she was "fucking crazy." Literally every five pages. It got to the point where the details of the abuses were repeated so often that it diminished their impact. And these were really horrible abuses! The entire book read as a drawn-out amateur creative non-fiction writing project, which is wild since Olsen has a prolific writing career. I honestly think this entire story would have worked a lot better as a longreads article as it was quite long and just didn't do it for me.

Also! A quote from this book: "Shane was humiliated and angry with Shelly, but he let her do it." This was referring to one of the many instances of intense physical and mental abuse that Shelly inflicted on her nephew Shane. This wasn't the only instance, but it really stood out to me how it felt like Shane chose to be subjected to this? That's not how abuse works, honey!

Honestly, I found the afterword from the forensic psychologist Dr. Katherine Ramsland better written than the entirety of the book. A nicely written four pages to make up for the previous 340 I guess!

Proceed with caution. This book contains very sensitive topic. It contains abuse, torture and humiliation. I had to brace myself whenever Shelly would turn on her crazy switch again.

It's such a pity what the children have endured all those years. I hope they get the help they need to break the cycle of abuse to their family.

The book, however, is poorly written. I have observed that there are inconsistencies on the events. I feel like the timeline of events are not well organized. Also, the book is repetitive, like I'm watching a crime documentary video to keep the suspense going.

Good read but could have been shorter

I think for the amount of the same details being expressed, the book could’ve been shorter. It was a good read but it was dreadful there in the middle

Kind of a strange perspective. Essentially reads like an article that incorporates a bunch of quotes from all of the people but remains at a distance from everything happening. Ultimately it feels a bit strange for a novel, to me. It doesn’t really feel like it’s telling the victims stories, just recount events as best as they know, despite some of the dialogue having to be an extrapolation.

You do learn what happened in chronological order, stitched together from research and interviews. So if that’s what you want and expect, you’ll get that. It’s just formatted in an odd way in order to tell this particular story. It almost feels like an oral history you’d watch on those true crime shows that reenact what’s happened.

It was very interesting at first, but the writing wasn’t the best. There really wasn’t any order and I was constantly confused of when certain things were happening. I also think the book could have been shortened, some parts were pretty repetitive. However, with direct quotes from the family, it definitely pulls on some heart strings

Very poorly written. Needs a good editor.

torn

content was gripping and the story was heart breaking but presentation got a bit stale at times. I skimmed a lot but it is still a very powerful story.

Abi Lee

I just couldn't get through it. Made it halfway and didn't see where it was going so I gave up.

Venessa Johnstone

Heart breaking tale.. couldn't put it down..

Andrea McGuffey

I thought the book was really really good but if you've been a victim of mental or physical abuse, I do not recommend. Some of the events were hard for even me to stomach and the fact that these are true events makes it that much more unnerving.
