(The mouse, powerless against Lennie’s strength, represents the lack of control one has over life’s circumstances. Hence the dead mice represent the shattered dreams)

Loneliness is explored in the utmost of its hues and facets. It is a feeling so overwhelming that various characters choose to talk to someone that does not have the capacity to comprehend their discourse. But it is better than talking to a wall. Characters in the book also seem to lack the capability to relate to one another's needs and aspirations which ends up in parallel monologues. Progressing screen-by-screen in this reading brings a feeling of helpless sadness. And the darkness of despair... Somehow, the accessibility in which Steinbeck writes, reaching to one`s every fiber of spiritual absorption, reminds me of a great Romania novelist Marin Preda.

Of Mice and Men is a 1937 novella written by American author John Steinbeck. It describes the experiences of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, as they move from place to place in California, searching for jobs during the Great Depression.

A beautiful short story about two friend on their way to make their dreams come true. Unfortunately, things don't go as expected, and we learn that sometimes sacrifices must be made, no matter how hard they are.

The book is about the struggles one takes in order to live the american dream. Thats what the entire story is. It revolves around 2 dudes: a small and quick witted George and a big built but mentally slow Lennie. The book shows all sorts of stuff like companionship, difficulties and ends on a very brutal and tragic note. My major criticism, which is also the reason behind me not able to rate it highter, is that this book is entirely written on metaphors regarding animals. The concept is alright but overall it starts getting on my nerves and I end up feeling annoyed by them. Some may like it but me? nah it kinda ruined the book for me, the ending rather saved it if I be frank.

I was forced to read this for school and found myself loving it. I enjoyed the depth of characters, the way that society and societal issues were shown, and over all the way the story progressed.

The relationship between brothers was truly heart warming up until the end. I was blown away by the ending and the choice he made, Part of me understands why he chose to shoot Lennie but at the exact same time because what if things had been different? I was told the ending was comprable to the trolley problem and I disagree, I feel there were so many options and the choice that George made was one of the worst ones. I could also be high;y biased because Lennie was my goat but I find so many scenarios where something different could have happened and they could have followed what they had planned originally. I will agree that what Lennie did was wrong but I have a big soft spot for him so I feel that what George did was deeply wrong.

I honestly think I would read this book again which is rare especially because of how I feel about the ending, I find myself wanting to read through the story again and see if I maybe have a different opinion with a fresh prospective.

The tragic story of the friendship between two migrant workers, George and mentally retarded Lenny, and their dream of owning a farm

This one is for pet lovers. Touching prose. Very Sentimental. Taking care of companions in a harsh world. I loved how the book captures the simplicity of caring for a pet. Responsibility of dependents. Innocent drive of caring crossing the line to smothering. What we do when something is past its prime, injured. The thin line of labouring making a purpose and mutual care. The mirroring fate of the mice and dogs and Lennie is a bit predictable but still sad and touching ending. The themes are still very true today. George and Lenny’s dreams and could be copy paste of today.

Very good quick read. Felt like the plot jumped very quickly despite Steinbeck’s persistent vivid detail. Enjoyed very much this second time around

A controversial tale of friendship and tragedy during the Great Depression

Over seventy-five years since its first publication, Steinbeck’s tale of commitment, loneliness, hope, and loss remains one of America’s most widely read and taught novels. An unlikely pair, George and Lennie, two migrant workers in California during the Great Depression, grasp for their American Dream. They hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations, nor predict the consequences of Lennie’s unswerving obedience to the things George taught him.

Of Mice and Men represents an experiment in form, which Steinbeck described as “a kind of playable novel, written in a novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands.” A rarity in American letters, it achieved remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films. This edition features an introduction by Susan Shillinglaw, one of today’s leading Steinbeck scholars.

Because Lennie can never pass from his state of innocence, he must be destroyed. Lennie represents that part in George, possibly in everyone, that remains childlike. It is important that George, himself, must destroy Lennie and that Lennie literally dies with the dream. Before his death, Lennie repeats the dream like a catechism and urges George, “Le’s do it now,” after which George pulls the trigger. Lennie dies with the dream. Lennie becomes a metaphor for the death of innocence within a selfish society that cannot comprehend him or his relationship with George. To illustrate this point, Steinbeck allows the character Carlson the final word, “Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin’ them two guys?” Carlson embodies an apathetic society that cannot understand a relationship based upon trust and love rather than avarice. Carlson insists upon killing Candy’s dog because “He don’t have no fun.” Like the society he epitomizes, all of Carlson’s judgments deal in the superficial. For Steinbeck, that is a world that cannot sustain innocence.

such an easy and quick read when I didn’t expect it to be. Can certainly feel the impending doom at times, but in a good foreshadowing way, not a predictable way. really loved this book actually.

A short novella that plays out more like an American fable. I couldn't help but view Steinbeck's tale through a disability lens, which enriched my experience as much as it saddened it. It's a window into the past, but only just. The types of cultural and societal attitudes towards Lennie throughout the story are very much present today, and often produce similar effects; folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at disproportionately higher risk for abuse, neglect, financial exploitation and police violence. I don't necessarily think Steinbeck set out to comment specifically on the way the illusion of the American Dream willfully ignores the existence of disability (or shuns it outright), but it's there all the same. I have personal stake in the topic, so I gravitated towards this reading of the story. Others, as I have seen, sometimes take entirely different things from it. Sorry to my high school English teacher for lying that I read this! I completed any and all assignments relating to this book with the help of SparkNotes. I wouldn't have liked it half as much as I do now, anyways.

Drifters in search of work, George and his childlike friend Lennie, have nothing in the world except the clothes on their back - and a dream that one day they will have some land of their own. Eventually they find work on a ranch in California's Salinas Valley, but their hopes are dashed as Lennie - struggling against extreme cruelty, misunderstanding and feelings of jealousy - becomes a victim of his own strength. Tackling universal themes of friendship and shared vision, and giving a voice to America's lonely and dispossessed, Of Mice and Men remains Steinbeck's most popular work, achieving success as a novel, Broadway play and three acclaimed films.

"Les deux hommes levèrent les yeux car le rectangle de soleil de la porte s'était masqué. Debout, une jeune femme regardait dans la chambre. Elle avait de grosses lèvres enduites de rouge, et des yeux très écartés fortement maquillés. Ses ongles étaient rouges. Ses cheveux pendaient en grappes bouclées, comme des petites saucisses. Elle portait une robe de maison en coton, et des mules rouges, ornées de petits bouquets de plumes d'autruche rouges."

This story is very well written. The character development done by the author is amazing. The themes of loneliness, ambition and nature of a dream are well portrayed. The ending made me bawl my eyes out 😭

I absolutely adored this book. I did cry at the end though. WHY LENNIE WHY? I loved the plot and the impossibility of the dream and the characters and how LENNIE MEANT NO HARM. It is safe to say I was bawling at the end of the book. This is one of the few classics that I loved.
